I am Trying out SEO for the first time, need some help on Backlinks

I ask in WF because you guys seem smarter than most other forums.

Sorry for the newbie post. Am I a newbie? Not really, but I have never had a business model where SEO was a big factor. I do a lot of things through content, and most of my sites are micro niche sites that rank organically on the 1st page of google without the need for a lot of SEO.

I understand on page SEO, that is how I get my micro niche sites up. But, I want to branch out and learn a new aspect of affiliate marketing.

I wrote a ezainarticle and social bookmarked it. I also did some non spam forum and blog commenting using that article as the landing page (used anchor text for the keywords on my forum sigs.).

The article went live in the second spot of the third page of google for its keyword, after the things I did, it hasnt moved an inch.

My question is, where do I learn how to move my Ezinearticle article up in the SERPS? Why am I optimizing the article and not my own properties? I am doing it as a learning experience. I have about 80 micro niche sites targetting one keyword a piece, all of them are on the first page of google (w/o building backlinks other than social bookmarking). But, I want to be able to build fewer sites that target multiple keywords.

I simply do not understand backlinks!

One of the things to keep in mind is that when you see a result from your efforts, you want to be able to trace it back to a specific action you took (as best as possible). There are any number of things you can do, like increase the number of sources for backlinks, branch into RSS feeds, etc., but it's a lot harder than it may sound because you have to be patient and not do too many things at once.

While you're patiently waiting, you can set up similar sites and either do exactly the same things, or do something slightly different, sort of like split testing. You should also gather as much information as you can about the sites above you in the SERPS. This is where some people get the keyword content and try to duplicate that in ezinearticles content, but don't limit yourself to ezine, or just article directories.

How long to wait- well you'll determine that through testing, too, because it's different for everyone, depending on their overall strategy(I generally wait 1-2 weeks for some things 3-4 for others), you'll get a feel for the cycles and know when to push something new out there.

The sites above me, the sites on the first page anyway, have paid links. The site with the first listing has 600 backlinks. The problem is, he is advertising on other sites and paying for it.

Thanks for the heads up on the time freame, I was not aware of that.
 
Few tips for you. You've done the blog commenting to start with, but that doesn't mean you should stop there. Keep finding good, relevant blogs to comment on. Personally I don't give a rats ass about the nofollow/dofollow argument. I have a nice mix of both for lots of sites, and have good results.

If you're tired of commenting yourself, buy a blog commenting package in the BST section and while you're there, buy a social bookmarking package from Red_Virus.

I don't recommend doing this for a brand new site, but if you're sending the traffic to your Ezinearticle page, then my opinion is to just start building as many links as you can.

I still do hire out some directory submitting too. I think it can help, but make sure that you're getting a GOOD package to the better directories. Not just a bunch of no PR new directories. They probably wont' do much for you.

Buy links on other peoples sites. If you can't find anything you like in the BST section here, the BST over at Digital Point is probably the only redeeming part of that forum, and you can buy some cheap links on related sites to your niche.

All of these techniques will help build your backlink count and help you get up there on the first page. SEO ain't for the quick buck artists..but if you put in the time and have patience it will pay off in the long run. The key is to just stay consistent with it. If you decide to do all of this for a new domain, just go slow at first. Chances are you'll end up playing in the sand with Google for a while if you link build too quickly.

Basically a new page is very vunerable to getting redflagged.

If your ezine article gets redflagged it wont cost you as much as if your own site got a penalty. Also it can not be as easily traced to you. and thirdly it's A LOT more resilliant than your new site due to it's size and history. So instead of redflagging your article, it gets "search engine plusvotes". It gets strong authority, and so does it's most important link. the link to your page. It will however always outshine your site if you do not 1) write your article about something VERY RELATED BUT NOT EXACTLY THE SAME (the link however must be spot on), and 2) DIVERSIFY with more authorative places.

Regarding 1), try to make your article a source of information and your site a source of buying shit. That's enough, buy words, prices, modelinformation on the site. Just information in the article that peaks interest and presells.
 
It is a good idea that you analyze your niche competitors who are already ranking well to see what they are doing to rank. I go as much as analyzing the top 10 competitors, collate all the links then check their page ranks and filter out any backlink lower than a specific PR(It depends on the competition but anything below 3 i usually don't use). Once i have these list, i go through each of the links one after the other and see if i can also get a link from them. It depends on the type of backlink it is, if it allows automation, I automate and if it doesn't I go with the conventional way.

It gets even easier if i find an ezine article ranking in top 10 or 20. I know the competitor has done all the needed work, and I just go right after it and copy his or her success.

There are a whole lot more ways to get backlinks.

Just research and test.
