I just don't understand this tutorial...



You need to show your site really, it could be a thousand different things. Make sure you have all assets (javascript and image files) included in the right place and classes / ids are named correctly everywhere.
 
It's just a cross fade. I would first copy and paste all their code to a new folder on your site. Test it out, see that it works, then try to implement it your actual site.
