Ideas on how to Write Good Copy...

Really good post. I know this may sound a bit odd but I sort of stole a technique from back when I was studying for my sociology degree to help me think 'emotionally' about text. I get a good old piece of paper and a pen and put whatever topic it is I am going to write about, set a timer for 2 minutes and play word association by putting down words of short phrases that pop into my head.

So, taking the weight loss example, I would put 'weight loss' at the top of the page and probably would come up with words or phrases such as:

- look better
- date more
- fit into jeans
- improve self esteem
- feel less shy
- good example to kids
- not die young

Things like that and then I flesh them out when I go to write. I figure if it popped into my mind in two minutes it also pops into the mind of the people I am trying to get to click and/or buy.

+rep, strong post. I suck balls at writing copy, i rely on my design skills for lp's, so this might help me out.

Couldn't edit my post above within the 10 minutes. So here's an extension.

The only thing I can really throw up here, still basic in some respects, but it's been really effective in my ad copies that I've written for offline businesses advertising online, is really focusing your ad on showing how your business/product will satisfy your customer's end results/needs that they are looking for.

For instance I was advertising for a local fairy party business a few weeks back, and did my research of all the businesses competitors who were already advertising on adwords & YSM. And one thing I noticed was that they were focusing on the details of their businesses and were totally forgetting the end results. For example the competition had ad copies such as H: "Have a Fairy themed party" SH: "Wings, Wands and Wonder! Contact Us Now".

However I went for the approach of selling the end result that the target demographic was looking for. The target market was middle aged woman looking to provide their daughters with a locally available, fun-filled, exciting, almost "dream-like" party that would be stress-free and easy. So after split testing I came up with copy on one ad that went along the lines of H: "Fun Magical Fairy Parties" SH: "Fairy Birthday Parties in X. Let Your Child's Dreams Come True!"

By targeting these end results/needs of the customer's the ads had amazing CTR, and the business was making profits over 10X their advertising spend; with a basic, yet effective website lander, that also sold the end results.

I've been noticing lately my "facts" not only don't get much response, but when I try to put facts, rather than emotional hooks in my FB ads, they get rejected. Even FB wants you to write for the emotional hook :)

I picked up "Tested Advertising Methods" and it's awesome. If you don't have it, check it out.

Anyone have any thoughts on Maslow's hierarchy of needs? Seems that Robbins' six things are somewhat related.

One helpful hint on copywriting that I have found is this (this may seem pretty basic, but it will help in your approach)

By going to amazon and looking for products that are related to your offers, you can often find really good Comments. The reason that I like to look at comments is because the person leaving them often is writing from their experiences and how the product has improved their life.

In copywriting it is important to get the reader on your "side". Meaning - agreeing with you. If you can write to them like you are having a casual conversation with them, rather than talking at them, you will see much better conversions.

Use these comments to your advantage to position yourself as having a regular conversation. Sometimes, you can find some dope that has gone on and on about a product, making your copywriting alot easier. Just change up some of the words, spin it, go in for the kill....

peace.

Nice thoughts and it does make a lot of sense too. Plus, I guess that way you would catch common phrases that keep coming up with the actual consumers of that product.

Great feedback peeps bring on more. I have another posting I'll make tomorrow or Monday about visual, auditory and feeling personality types. If you can pull all those in you'll see your numbers running up and the register ringing :)

Smax you are offically the shiznit.

Is it ok to take a sales page from a product that sells really well and "rewrite it" so it conforms to your product?

Like say you're selling red widgets. You go to some CB product with high gravity's salespage and it ends up being weight loss tea or whatever. Can you copy their format and everything but rewrite it so it's selling red widgets instead of tea?

So

"Are you tired of being fat and unhealthy?

becomes

"Are you tired of being [problems caused by not owning red widgets]?"

and so on?

I mean they're all basically the same.

narrow margins
yellow "testimonials"
handwritten-looking notes here and there
strikethrough prices
javascript countdown timers for when the sale "ends"
and those fucking annoying chat boxes that appear when you try to close the page

Yes that is all ok, it's how you learn to copywrite, who was it that said don't reinvent the wheel?

But do yourself a favour and stay away from CB, promote physical products or cpa offers instead.

One of the techniques Frank Kern uses is to create an avatar of the customer you're writing to... so you create a little profile with as much detail as you can - how old they are, what they look like, how you'd recognised them in a crowd, what their life is like, what sort of problems they have, and give them a name.

You then write all your copy as if it's just aimed at this one imaginary person. (obviously, different person for each niche!). Doing that gives your copy a much strong "connection" to the conversation in your prospects' mind.
