I have a fitness site that is relatively new. I'm targeting a main KW, but I should have a few more KWs to target as well, correct?

My supporting pages are targeting general KWs (like "weight loss diet"). I'm assuming that isn't specific enough.

I've read that KW diversification is important, so using my primary KW as a part of the supporting page KWs is likely not a good move either?

How do you know if Google penalizes your site, and how do you check up on your backlinks since Yahoo Site Explorer is not running anymore?

Thanks for the help. I'm serious about handling this shit, I'm just so fucking new right now!

Cheers

You're right, if it's that general and that competitive of a niche you need to know what you're doing to make monies with it. Find yourself some long tails and work from there.

Not sure what you're asking but if your primary keyword is related to your "supporting page" keyword there's no issue including it. Stick to 3-5 "main" KYs and you'll be fine. Throw in some long-tails and you'll be gold.

How do you know if Google penalizes your site

You'll drop from page 2 to page 561.2 - Don't be discouraged however oftentimes your site will "dance" and you'll find yourself ranking better than before if you keep building links.

and how do you check up on your backlinks since Yahoo Site Explorer is not running anymore?

I use the following program to check backlinks: SEO XLINKS

Hope that helps!
