Affiliate marketing doesn't necessarily have to do anything with Google itself. What you should learn from all the Google updates and slaps is that your online business, just like any other business, shouldn't rely on ONE source of traffic into your websites. You need multiple streams to keep it healthy and to hedge against any changes in the world.

Learn different forms of lead gen and you'll be golden with affiliate marketing (assuming you know everything else :P )

Best of luck Op!

you need to learn several methods of internet marketing, not just SEO so that you don't get owned by google (if you're doing the wrong things that is)

my honest opinion is that you should do both. who knows how long IM will take to build up for you - it may be fast or it may be slow. until you feel comfortable, i'd keep working on a stable occupation

although that's not what i did....hahah!

Instability doesn't exist. Incapability does.

People say Adsense is dead. Well, I know guys who are still killin' it.

Google adjusts its algorythm several times each year. This could be looked at as a kind of stability: you can count on constant change.

If you're looking for stability, I can give you an example of a business that was stable for a while. I used to visit a bank safe depot vault, and there were the same old guys year after year in blue smocks that carried the keys to open and close the boxes. They used old timey black rotary phones, and all of the account info was kept on paper index cards in a big file cabinet.

Then one day the bank was bought out by a larger bank and all accounts were closed. The building was turned into a department store and the old men in smocks lost their jobs.

Instability will always force its way in no matter what.

LOL @ this. So you think Adsense is not dead just because some guys tell you they are banking hard with Adsense?

Overall, affiliate marketing and cost per action marketing continues to grow. It's changing, but the concept is growing and has been more productive for many merchants than straight up CPM and branding advertising that was so prevalent before.

However, to succeed you need to stay flexible. See the areas that are the strongest, and work with companies and people you trust. Diversify when possible, and avoid having all of your eggs in one basket.
