Is it possible to rise above google places?

Google places is the #1 result for some KWs, and like #5 or so for others. Is it possible to rise above google places on the keywords where it has been #1?
 


How you worded it, it seems like you answered your own question. When Google places is ranked #5, what is ranked above it? If it is other websites...
 
Yes websites can rank above it, but Im unsure as to how google determines the location of the google places listing. Perhaps they are placed at #5 because they arent clicked enough? etc? I want to know if its possible through internal and external seo to dethrone a #1 ranked google places listing and if anyone has had any experience with it
 
Of course you can outrank it. I have a local business website that I set up as a test, that ranks no.2, and Google places is listed after my site.

Don't hesitate, just go for it!
