You were not dreaming, there are a few paid versions, but here is a free one :)

WP Hive - Multiple WordPress Blogs with a Single Installation

btw, the next version of WP after 2.9, ie 3.0, is going to have WPMU merged into it. Its due in March.

Can't you only manage everything under that one domain... meaning... 1.domain.com 2.domain.com 3.domain.com....

I think the OP is looking for something for number domains, not subdomains.

WordPress › Kish Multi - Manage Multiple Blogs From a Single Blog WordPress Plugins
^^^ Can handle comments and posts from separate domains on different hosts from one admin panel. The admin styling is a bit lackluster but you can clean that up yourself by digging into it a bit. Out of the box it pulls in comments flagged as spam along with the rest of them.

Scribefire: Fire up your blogging
^^^ Decent. Can't manage comments though.

I've yet to find the perfect solution for my needs: something that can manage posts, comments, themes, plugins, etc for installs located on separate hosts.

They've been saying this for a long time, and each time a big long list of reasons why they can't do it comes up. I really hope 3.0 actually delivers.
