Found some time to do a little browsing when WF was down the last few days and came across this cool little site with jParallax and thought it was pretty cool. So hopefully you can put it to some use.

jParallax turns a selected element into a 'window', or viewport, and all its children into absolutely positioned layers that can be seen through the viewport. These layers move in response to the mouse, and, depending on their dimensions (and options for layer initialisation), they move by different amounts, in a parallaxy kind of way.

the library is here:
jquery.jparallax.js [11k] 0.9.9 BETA

And a couple of cool demos:

Demo 2

Ooooh, I like this. Now I have to find some tasteless, flash-style stuff to cheese up for no reason.

Check out GitHub's 404 page. I don't think they use jParallax, but still some kind of js parallax effect. https://github.com/jparrrrrrralaxx
Thats exactly what it is. Thats a pretty cool use.
