Hi everyone. I am in the beginning stages of blogging and had a question regard content legality.

I did not see anywhere in the wordpress faq that said I could not post pictures that did not belong to me.

What I want to do is compile a blog of all kinds of pictures of a specific category. People can of course post there own original ones as well. If I put a disclaimer in the about section that lets people know I am not claiming the images as my own and that if an original image owner for whatever reason does not want an image up, I will take it down.... would this be fair game?

I want to of course have an article section that I author as well as a product link section, and I have not figured out if it is legal to post pictures that do not belong to me or have not expressly been authorized to me, on a blog that generates profit through advertisements.

Thanks you for helping me!

You shouldn't have a problem is you link to the original source of the images. Use GNU images from flickr if possible.

so if I just use images I find in google images or in forums that others have posted what should i do?

The reality is this. It's not free to shoot and create professional images. How would you feel if someone stole your work?

Having said that there are plenty of public domain images available. If you use someone else's work without proper credit they still have to find you and complain. That's reality. A small blog will likely not be found. And if you are asked to remove an image by the owner you either remove it or make a deal with them to use it.

I have only been asked to removed content 1 time in the past 10 years, and that was from a site I had someone create for me. But I generally write all my own stuff so it's not a problem for me.

I have however had tons of my work lifted and used by others without my permission.

It's a big world what can you do?

The reason I joined this Forum was to learn how to make a blog too. I also want to learn how to make videos for YouTube. I was planning on snitching images from Google too. I have to get the photos from somewhere - sure can't take pictures worth a flip myself ( my hands shake too much).

So, from what these fellows who answered you are saying, it seems to me we can try it and hope we don't get caught OR like in the case of a You Tube video, at the end of the video say something like "I do not own these images - they are from Google images". Is that right?

The Photo Dropper plugin enables you to add Flickr photos to your blog which have been labelled as available for commercial use. It automatically links back to the original photo giving credit to the photographer.

I think that's the safest way to go.

If you get caught, is the worst thing that can happen is they get you to take them down?
No.
The worst that can happen is a court order demanding you take your site down for misuse of their IP.
MORE likely, they'll just sue you for damaging their brand/rep and demand a share (usually 100%) of revenues generated during the period in which you used their images.

Ferbent: Hmmm, thanks for that link. Looks pretty useful
