I haven't paid much mind to my robots.txt file in a while as far as what to disallow.

I noticed recently that I had been getting hit by this "TurnItIn" bot on a few of my sites. Never heard of it and checked it out but I don't know - something stinks about it to me.

Anyhow got me thinking so...looking for some suggestions to update my robots.txt file.

turnitin is what a lot of schools use to check for plagairism. They search multiple sources and used to use google to check web content, but lately they have been building up their own index.

In my opinion there isn't really a reason that you shouldn't have a robots.txt file for your website or blog. I have one on every site or blog that I put up. This is one of the first things that I like to do.

But remember robots.txt is like asking someone not to hammer your site.

Blocking IPS in htaccess is like forcing them not to hammer your site. Of course you need lots of data to do that.

And I like doing robots.txt for the simple reason it works sometimes and it is one less page that generates 404s if it is not there.
