To get a site started I have written some overview / review articles linking to perspective future affiliates. It is a plus to provide them some free traffic before signing up with their program? You might be able to cite the number of clicks already generated during the application process. Then again, they might not care to pay for what their already getting for free.

I also have cases where I have grabbed sample product images, is it likely they will gripe about the "unauthorized" images they spot during the review process?

How would they know how many clicks you are generating if you aren't on their program?

How would they know it was you? If they are hesitant about approving you, doing something ignorant won't help your position. Just apply and then pick up the phone and call.
