How many times should a main keyword be used in a 500 word article, and how many times should an LSI keyword be used in the same article?

I was thinking use the main keyword twice and the LSI keywords at least once?

You actually right. But I think it's better have more LSI keywords. Get for example 2 main keywords, in semrush find 4-5 LSI keywords and put them in your article. Then check density, I prefer to use seoquake for that.

LSI keywords are just more keywords that are related to your topic.

Shouldn't all 500 words be related to your topic?

Its been said that ideal keyword density is 2-3%... In my opinion, density depends upon your content's requirement. If your content demands, you can insert keywords... but excess of everything is bad. Keep the density organic as long as possible.

As fat as keyword density in concerned. You should not have as much as 5 main keywords in a article and your LSI keyword shouldn't be more than your main keyword.

And the number of anchor text you will use is another thing.

My keyword density optimal keyword density is perfect keyword density at around keyword density of 58% keyword density. Don't forget keyword density to sprinkle keyword density some LSI keyword density words.

EDIT: thought this was T&C. Don't worry about the density or number of times you use a word. Go get your list of related or "LSI" terms and sprinkle them through the article where appropriate...no need to force things and make it sound silly like what I posted above.
I usually try to get my main keyword somewhere once in the first couple of sentences and once in the last couple of sentences. If it shows up elsewhere in the article writing natural-sounding prose, then great. Along with the use of related terms you should know if you have researched the niche, Google can easily figure out how to categorize your content.

A well written, relevant and engaging article should naturally have LSI within it. Do not try to manipulate as much as write good content. Though if you are not certain how to structure a page - using LSI to help you build your outline before writing may be a good idea.

Agreed.

Who typically produces the most well-written, relevant, and engaging articles? The experts do. For a non-expert to look and sound the part, assuming they can write, should do some research and pay attention to the handful of words (jargon) that is used by the experts.

What I described in the post above isn't about manipulating content, rather it's about being cognizant of and incorporating those related terms that are common and important in authoritative-sounding content about your specific niche.
