Managing clients Adwords. Do you take money upfront?

I'm starting to get more clients and curious how others manage the money side of things.

I have been asking the client to give me x amount (normally the amount we spent the previous month) at the beginning of the month before it is spent on Adwords.

I run this out of my account.

Any insight into this of what I could be doing better to manage the money/account or what you do?

You're flirting with disaster and you need to set up a new account for them with their own billing info.

Running out of your account with your billing is totally inviting them to screw you over at some point. if you continue to handle your clients with your own billing info and then get raped at some point do not post about it here.
 
OK.

Does this mean I start a brand new adwords, yahoo, and msn account just for them or is there a way to integrate their billing info in my current accounts?

If you read much from Google they recommend not running things out of your account and not taking in the ad money into your Accounts Receivable. You are holding money and the tax consequences are not entirely clear. Depending on how it is invoiced it might look like income but it is not.

Plus customers will pay late. And their ad spend will take off in the holidays etc. No way you should be covering that for most customers.

It's bad enough when they pay late on your fees.

As far as I know they all should be separate accounts. Plus if your own campaigns or one of your clients campaigns takes out your account (for being CPA, rebill, or something) you don't lose all your clients accounts.
 
Use Adwords 'My Client Center'. No one needs to open a new PPC account. You simply have access to their PPC accounts. They pay the click costs.

If they don't have an Adwords account, they can sign up for one, use their info to pay click costs, and once again you manage the account with your own login info + password etc.

Then just bill them their management fee (which is income for your business, and is taxed accordingly). Nice and clean.
 
not sure about Bing but Yahoo can set you up with multiple accounts within your current account and u can use separate billing info in each one if needed and name them Client 1, Client 2 or whatever you want. you just need to get a rep, contact them to find out.

PS: if you're doing anything shady in your current account dont contact a rep about that one.
