So i have some questions for anyone that can help. My partner is in the Fashion Industry and the situation is this: We are creating a site for the fashion industry that will promote the latest clothing lines, gear, and industry events. Through relationships already built we are obtaining the mailing list of these online retailers.

I am curious as to the best way to make money with this. Initially we thought to use the mailing lists just to drive traffic to the site where we promote different retailers. Any sales generated from the links on our site would result in a commission and would need to track.

is this possible and what else could i do with the data??

Do the online retailers already have affiliate programs set up? If so, then they should have tracking in place, but if they do not, then you might have an uphill battle ahead of you.

You could also work on building your site up, so it has lots of original content and good natural ranking, then sell ads to the companies you have relationships with. You would have to have a decent amount of traffic for this to be appealing to the other companies though.

No these retailers do not have any programs set up as of yet. Its funny to see how many retailers do not understand how big of a market the internet is. Anyway, better for us cause every little thing we show them blows their mind.

Regarding your statement we are def going to stay up on content but realistically how much traffic do we need to that site each month in order for those ads to be a good money maker??

I don't think there is any set amount of traffic that will bring in a set amount of commisions. Scale it out to get as much traffic as you can, social bookmarking, directory submissions, create a page at squidoo targeting your keywords, do the same at hubpages and wordpress.com, these will get ranked and link back to your money page.

Then to get those links some juice, do above again only this time target a different keyword and link back to the hubpage, squidoo and wordpress site you created. however mixx it up 2nd time, create a wikidot page, a blogspot and a tubigg page.

All these will help you drive traffic to your site organically. I have a epn site that I bought the domain for 9 days ago and with methods listed above, Im already on the 2nd page for my top keywords. Not too shabby....

edit: hit up digg as well.

I'd love to give you some input, but I'm actually working on a very similar project right now. One thing I can say is that the fashion industry is a very "networky" industry. When you meet people, things really open up.

Lots of people shoot themselves in the foot by starting out nationally or globally in the fashion realm (one of my start ups included). You should look to open your shop locally and let it spread out that way. Develop a reputation and always ALWAYS be active in the community.

Gary Vaynerchuk should be your hero in this regard.
