Does the domain extension make any difference to ranking? I understand that cctld's will only rank well in that country unless you do some serious seo work. Am I correct?

Does .com, .net, .org make any difference?

There is no difference in how well a .com, .net, or .org rank. There may be some difference in how people perceive them but I think it is much less than it used to be.

As ARVolund indicates, there is supposed to be no seo difference between the big three extensions you mentioned, there was a large number of .info BANS sites that got mass de-listed a while back, this is probably more due to the sort of site $1 domains tend to get tied to and not the extension specifically, still, I wouldn't invest more than a few hours of development time on a .info site.
Note how almost universally, the top ranked sites for any significant keywords are .com, those investing thousands into the development of a top ranked site recognize the type-in advantage of .com domains, some domainers appraise .com domains at x10 the value of lesser extensions.

.com has an advantage because it is top of mind for most people.

For SEO purposes, there is not a difference between them.

Also I am very weary of .co because people will naturally type .com

Maybe in another 10 years extensions will be just that...but for the time being .com and .net is what most people remember and for non US countries their own country codes.

Thanks guys for clearing up the confusion.

I agree about CCTLD's. A few big sales hype up the market, people buy crappy domains hoping to make a few easy $$$, then the market dies.
