Sigh. I'm sorry for asking this. Hell, I'm sorry anyway. Here I'm pasting my oh-so-important site information on a competitive forum. Don't hurt me.

I have a site with keywords. Maybe it's a boring site. Who knows. It's certainly ugly.

Yoga Information for Beginners

I go to google adwords and create adword keyword groups and advertising. Example:

[SIZE=-0]Yoga and Weight Loss[/SIZE]
Get the skinny on yoga
and how it helps you lose weight
yogareflection.com

This goes to the specific page on yoga and weight loss.
Yoga and Weight Loss

Here's the problem:
all my keywords, using both the exact and the phrase options, want to start at a buck a pop.

Keywords:
"extreme weight loss diet"
"yoga and weight loss"
[extreme weight loss diet]
[yoga and weight loss]

However, I've seen people say they can get their ads to run at about 3 cents a pop.

Is the problem my site, my ads, my keywords, or am I just a loser noobie? I'm listening.:bigear:
 


I'm not an seo expert but I wouldn't use the word "and" in my search terms. Do you know which keyword/phrases these 3¢ people are using? Because they are probably crappy and don't generate much traffic.
 
Weight loss is an expensive term.

Why not go for a pregnancy term (yoga is very big during pregnancy, it helps with labor) or a stress related term...or any other term that gets a lot of traffic but doesn't have the high cost of weight loss and diet associated with it.

Both terms, prenatal yoga and pregnancy yoga aren't competitive. No, they don't get near as many searches as the single term yoga but you have a better chance of getting low priced ads with those terms.

So what I'm hearing is it's primarily a problem with the keywords; they're too "expensive." Otherwise my landing pages and stuff would be "fine." Great. Gives me a place to focus.
 
You are totally right about your site being ugly. :D Just calling it like it is. Some simple CSS and a little work could clean it right up.

Okay, just checked and you are using CSS. Ummm...you just need practice. If site design is not your thing, don't worry, there's OSWD to the rescue. OSWD is a collection of free templates. Some are very nice. Here's a nice one that should be easy to adapt: Open Source Web Design - Preview - SilverGlow

I really havent seen 3 cents on anything lately. 5 cents is the lowest and I always default at least 6 to get above those people.

OSWD rocks, I still use it. It is so much faster than my slow ass skillz.

The site may be the major problem - its soulless, feels empty and abandoned. It looks and feels like one of those countless made-for-a-quick-buck sites. The design is not necessarily the problem, there are plenty of ugly sites that are hugely successful, but this one lacks personality.

How about adding some personal touch to it, like adding a real story on how yoga helped somebody; have an about page, a news section, a links section. Update the site every now and then (dosen't have to be often, once every few weeks is enough for such sites). Announce the updates in your news section. Have an RSS feed, add a newsletter subscription. Make the site look and feel alive and active. Don't write bullshit/don't care content, people will quickly detect that. Be patient. Start with link building for a few months (you only have a few backlinks now) and only then start concentrating on conversions.
 
@seomike: Hah! thanks. Actually that's on my list of things ( it was right after fixing the stupid links to the aff sites ) to do. Your example is perfect.

@webninja: but it is a soulless made-for-a-quick-buck site. Don't I get points for honesty? :)

Seriously; thanks again for the help. I'll work on the soulless aspect and the design. I won't worry about the PPC costs for a while then.

Also try to make it unique, challenging, gripping.

How about using FUN images, pictures that spin a story on yoga and well being?
EVEN the pic in the design example from mike is better than those bland stock images.
There we have someone so fit, so full of life, she is jumping over a fence on a great, misty autumn morning.
On your site, we have some bland male model receiving a blowjob on the beach. Fuck, he's not even enjoying it.. damn, she must be ugly.

(*Girly alert*) Anything that makes the internet a prettier place, is alright in my book.
 
Had a peek at the site and I think something that would help you is putting some more pictures on there... You have sections for the merchandise, why not include some pictures of the merchandise? I like to see what I'm buying and why not have pictures of yoga mats, clothing, equipment and videos on your front page?

Also to put some spin on this why not do some interesting articles on the celebrities who do yoga?

Sorry if I'm repeating what somebody else has already said. I can't be ars*d to trawl through all the replies here to check first :)
