In my first campaigns i was launching a campaign with over 1000 keywords.

I now came to a conclusion that i may be wrong. In the first period of a campaign i am still testing it and i allocate a certain amount of $ to the campaign. Spreading this budget on 2000 keywords will leave me with no statistics so either I am very lucky or I am just loosing money.

So my conclution was to start a campaign with more or less 10 ad groups - I am aggregating some longtails into an ad group but still no more 5000 keywords for a campaign.

What do you think?

I think that is too many keywords. What i notice is that usually only about 10% of the keywords in your campaign are driving traffic to your site. I tried using alot of keywords and found that managing them to be too time consuming. I am in the process of testing out some tools to see if I can research and find out what are the effective keywords that my competitor is using for the same niche and use those keywords for my campaign.

Can you give figures? what a reasonable testing budget? how many keywords are you using when starting a campaign?
