Plenty of Fish noob question

I am going to try out an offer to put up on Plenty of Fish direct linking back to a CB product. Not ideal I know, but I want to give it a try quickly.

The product has wide appeal across the female demopraphic.

I am going to split test 25 different ads each in two different 10 year age groups, but should I narrow it down further while I am in the testing phase?

So even though this product appeals women of all races, should I only pick one while I am testing the ads and then expand to other races and countries as I narrow down the most effective ads?

Or is it best to open up the demographics during the initial test to as wide as it makes sense to, then narrow down the demographics according to the data?

I think it would be the latter yes?

So start a new campaign, set the cpm bid somewhat high, let the ads run and monitor the performance. Then create new campaigns based on the data... so if only women over 50, in the UK who smoke and are overweight buy the product, then in the end, that's who I should target with the ad or ads that converted best.

Make sure your affiliate offer allows all the countries you are interested in. Most affiliate networks seem to want US, CA and sometimes UK traffic. International offers are few and far between.

At least that's the case for the couple of networks I am in.

So I started my campaign last night and I think my question has been answered by the limitations of the Plenty of Fish site. I thought that they would give me back data on the clicks, such as age, country, hair color, etc. of the people that clicked, but I don't see that in the back end anywhere.

That means I need to split test the best I can with the information I have from the beginning and further refine as I go.

Is there a reason why PoF wouldn't give that info back to the advertisers?

Privacy and also tracking is your job not theirs :)

Yes, I see that now...

I set myself up pretty well here. I am quickly seeing what ads are working and what aren't. Plus, although I am behind right now, I am getting sales so I am very encouraged. Can't wait to refine this all further.

OK that didn't go so well. Spent $300 to make $120... and my CTR plummeted as the week wore on, even though I did a second round with new images and deactivating the ads with poor CTR. I also targeted my demographic better in the second round with the tools PoF provides.

Obviously I have a lot to learn here. Back to the data and studying up on PPC.

Thanks wiredniko. I spent the weekend studying up... maybe should have done that before this experiment. Not too bummed about the money, but I will be if I don't learn the lessons from this first go-round.

Here's what I've learned so far about why I might have failed.

1. My pictures were not attention grabbing enough. Too mundane.

2. I think I started with too many ads. I should've kept the number of ads low on the initial tests. I had 5 ad titles w/ descriptions mixed and matched with 5 images to make 25 different ads. I think this diluted the impressions and cost me more money.

3. CPM rate was too high. At first I set it at 76 cents per 1000, then raised it towards the end. I think I should've started much lower. But I haven't gotten clear direction on how to strategize this in PoF.

4. I think the offer was a little tired. Been around the block on PoF already. Waiting for my approval on a CPA network to get some better offers.

My next campaign will take these into account and be tested.
