Logically no, but us humans aren't all that logical and are ruled and controlled by our emotions. We've never been masters of our emotions and I can't see that changing.
There's a lot of people who wouldn't exist if it wasn't for our general compassion towards them.
Christian opposition to abortion goes back to Roman times, when unwanted babies were abandoned at certain places outside the city of Rome.
Certain Christian groups tried to claim the unwanted babies and save their lives.
Historical trivia note of the day: Christianity was known and the "wives and slaves" religion because it placed a value on human life, ie dared to argue that the life of a slave or a wife should not ended on the whim of the head male of the household.
