Does anyone have a good source to get updated proxies from on a regular basis? Preferably free? I need a source for a project I'm working on. They don't have to be lightning fast and I already have some script written to check for dead ones. I looked around and the ones I'm finding are dead almost all the time.

Any references for VPS providers that don't care about or will look the other way on a private proxy?

Very few will care about you running a private proxy in itself. The box is there for you to run what you need. It's what you are running through the proxy that might be an issue. If they start getting calls from Facebook saying "These IP's are spamming us" there will be issues, but realistically almost any site will just block the IP. Because of this, if your using this for very specific static sites, using your own static IP proxies usually isn't a good option cause once there blocked you SOL.

Thanks for the input. Didn't know if providers ran scripts to scan for proxy code (similar to how Softlayer alerts you when there is sendmail code on your box). Figured they might just indiscriminately shut them down based on code, not volume.

Some might have specific rules against it but you would have to look at their TOS for that. Basically if your renting a VPS or a dedicated box its yours to do what you please with, legally. I would suggest getting a proxy that lets u restrict by IP though cause u dont want people scanning for them. squid shoud allow u to do that:

How about IPs with the VPS? I would guess you're pretty easy to spot with 128 IPs all in the same range.

if you don't need to worry too much about speed try tor
