Question about pinging

I understand that pinging your rss feed or website url is alerting other popular sites (which google favors etc.) that you have new content and this can help get your page indexed faster.

Using services like:

But technically, what is actually happening when a ping is sent? Like, where is it sent (on those sites) and what is it doing?

+Basically your blog will send a xmlrpc(http-post) request with your new post info to the ping server and depending where you sent it, it will either be forwarded to another site or their index will be updated with your new post.

Your blog can also accept xmlrpc requests so you can run like 90% of your site remotely if you set it up.
