Hi there, i have a quick question if i may. Will a .co.uk site that is hosted on servers in the US show up/perform in the UK google or do i need to get a new UK based hosting account. Is the .co.uk TLD enough? Any help much appreciated.
Thanks for reading.

A co.uk domain on US servers will perform just fine in google uk.

The issue only comes about if you are trying to rank a .com in the uk and are also using US servers (even then you can target the UK via webmaster tools).

Well even thought that you have a country code TLD i think that google still looks at where the site is hosted for local rankings.. Correct me if i am wrong but i think that if you host the site in the UK it should perform better in local rankings..

I'd go with a uk server to be safe, I've had a site go from absolutely no ranking in google.com to being at the #2 spot 2 days after moving the site from a server in the netherlands to one in the US. I know google does factor in the TLD, I can't see why they wouldn't also factor in the geographic location.

The plot thickens. Ok well thanks for the advice. I was thinking about getting a UK account anyway so i will go ahead and get one for this job. For future reference: If you buy a hosting account at 1and1.co.uk your site WILL be hosted in the US - Go with fasthosts!!! Thanks for the speedy responses i will post back when i am dominating!

Although I don't have experience with it, I have read in other places that in order to rank good in a specific country you need a local domain (which you have) a local server (which you don't, probably) and local backlinks.

Just for the record. My site is a .com hosted in the US, i added it to my google webmaster account and changed the target demographic to UK. It seems that this kept my ranking in google.com as well as replicating it in google.co.uk. Thanks.

A UK server without a doubt.
That's what i thought but as i said. I hosted in the US and changed my webmaster settings to target the UK and now i have the same ranking in .co.uk and .com catching all the strays that dont change the settings to UK only - the best of both worlds. At least that is the situation for now. Things may change.
