I know this is a really dumb question but is it possible for a blog rank on the top 10 on google search? Is it harder or has the same chance as all websites? Thank you.

Yes. Difference of opinions... some claim they are more favored while others think they appear as cheap and spammy now but it really comes down to SEO.

So would it possible for a blog to rank on the top 10 in a short time if there was little competition

If you're somewhat aware of what you're doing then yes, couple weeks.

Most definitely. Make sure your on-page SEO is tight and get a diverse link profile built up. You will be able to jump on top of a low-comp niche pretty quickly.

If you have regular quality content, then yes it's possible. My personal blog is ranked #2 for a 106,000,000 broad short tail competing niche without me doing any link building for it. Granted, I get almost no traffic for that keyword even though Google's Keyword Tool (and Adwords) says it gets 18,000 monthly searches, but it does show that you can rank a blog.

As with anything, it takes work and isn't an over night process. Target a few different keywords and keep at it.

Blog, forum, other CMS, or homemade, makes no difference imo.

It's about onpage SEO and backlinks.

thanks for the advice guys I really appreciate it. So if I want to rank in a keyword should I try to mention that key word as much as possible on the site, other than creating back links?

There's a lot you should be doing other than creating backlinks. I suggest reading through http://www.wickedfire.com/traffic-content/6087-wickedfire-guide-seo.html, especially http://www.wickedfire.com/traffic-content/6087-wickedfire-guide-seo.html#post88340 which answers your question about whether your should mention your keyword as much as possible.

Another thing you should definitely hit up is SEO: The Free Beginner’s Guide From SEOmoz. It's available in a printable PDF format, so you can print it all out and read it over a cup of coffee in the morning or while your dropping the Cosby kids off at the pool. The resources I have linked you to should give you a pretty good foundation to start with, but if you have any more questions check out the stickies in the Traffic & Content sub-forum. Moreover, do not hesitate to ask questions, but make sure you've at least made an attempt at finding the answer beforehand.

Thank you so much I really will dl and read this, through out the day. From personal experience which would be the best thing to go into since I am a beginner. Like ppc or affiliate marketing? I have tried ppc and have only made $30 in the past month on the other hand I tried affiliate marketing and have had no success because probably I don't understand the marketing business fully. Is there other good things I should read to help me better understand how to set up an website properly.

And once again thank you for the tips and the suggested reads, I will definitely get a start asap.

Well, first off, I think you're a bit confused about a few lines of distinction. You use PPC to drive traffic to the landing page for an affiliate offer. I think what you're asking is whether you should go into the PPC game to drive traffic to your affiliate offer or whether you should use SEO methods to drive traffic. To that, I'll say it depends.

I'm a beginner, too, so I don't want this to be a case of the blind leading the blind, so I won't speak in absolutes. So far the only experience I have is in driving traffic through SEO methods, as I am waiting to make enough money from my strictly SEO projects to reinvest into PPC. So, I can't really comment on PPC.

However, there's a lot to learn regardless of which way you decide to go, so my best advice is to decide what you want to do and then start slaving away and read as much as you can, ask as many questions as you can, and don't stop learning in general. Regardless of what you choose, don't stay stuck forever reading. Actually do something. Experience is the best teacher.

haha thanks I think I will follow this advice it seems like the best way to go about it. And as for the blind leading the blind, haha right now its better than where I'm going. lol
And I couldn't agree more with you last sentence.
But thank you for all of your help I will take in all the tips and helpful reads you have given me and hopefully I can generate some profit by the end of this week lol.

Eh, don't go into it thinking you'll get rich quick. I'll be the first to admit that I'm constantly looking for the next get-rich scheme. To be honest, I first got into internet marketing thinking it was my final scheme, that I had finally found something that would make me money with little to no effort at all. I was obviously wrong. Nothing in life is easy. Anything worth doing is worth doing well. So, eliminate the thought that you can just read some stickies, ebooks, etc. and start making money without first having to have failed a few times or having to find that your expectations were far from realistic and being forced to start all over.

My biggest problem is acting on my knowledge. I have the tendency to read, read, read, ask, ask, ask, but I come up short when it comes to real life application. I'm always working on fixing that, but it is something I feel a lot of people struggle with.

Just grind, grind, grind. You forever need to learn, adapt, learn, adapt.
