In a fairly surprising move to most people one of the few Wordpress theme designers who was getting known is going to stop selling the themes he has designed on October 31st. And going to publish themes in the Open GPL format which will basically include free themes that people can use, modify, and tweak as long as they give credit to the original designer.

He says he will support the people that paid from $59.95 to $299.95 for a blog to a developers pack. Those old themes will be retired.

New ones will be created and supposedly different but I imagine quite similar to what is out now.

More at: Revolution Going Open Source

But the blog post is a little vague. There is a new post with more description:

Follow Up to Revolution Announcement

My take is he is going to get a ton of credit card chargebacks. Probably lose his merchant account.

Interesting move. I wonder if he wasn't making as much money as he had hoped?

So these new themes will be just as premium? If that's the case, I could totally see people flipping out on him and asking for their money back. Reminds me of the Ubercamp failure.

Could Thesis be the next to follow suit?

So in short, the themes for sale right now will become publicly available or what? Correct me if I'm wrong...

I think he's abandoning the current premium themes and they will only be available until October 31. Than on 10-31 new free themes will be on the site. It says something to the effect that he may charge for additional support, etc. From my understanding there will be whole new themes.

Tried to DL one ...still 299.99 :/

The themes that are currently for sale will only be sold until 10-31. Than new free themes will be on the site. You will never get the themes that are currently for sale for free unless you get them from PirateBay, etc.

So whats the word on this? The new Revolution2 site is up, but I see no options to download for free, or I'm mentally handicapped.

You just may be mentally handicapped. Each theme has a line at the bottom of the content with a link.

"* With the purchase of the Pro/Pro Plus packages, you receive benefits for ALL themes. Download unsupported version."

Haha, so it does.
I've been looking for a link since they were released...

That kinda sucks, I was one of the people who bought the developer pack a long time ago, has worked great for 5+ client sites. Never noticed any trojans/etc, though lots of people in forums/posts seem to find it hard replacing the adsense code.. but I think they're just newbs.

Downloaded two of the magazine style themes, but haven't had time to check them over. Has anyone checked them for affiliate links, malware, injections and such yet?

They're clean, a bit hard to mod, but clean nonetheless.

Keynes - Yeah I finally got a chance to wade through the PHP and found nothing except the expected link in the footer and I'll use my own images. Don't care about Ad Cents anymore.

Optimized - Can you can still sell them ? Might actually be OK if you can since the developer doesn't sell that exact theme anymore.

After reading this thread, I thought I'd check out revolution and see what they are all about.

I am currently running the streamline theme and whilst it is very clean, I think it was Keynes that said they were a bit hard to modify, I'll take it a step further and say they are a pain in the arse to modify and I am still wading through all the code to try and modify one or 2 more things.

The thumbnails on the featured posts page are proving to be a prick and the fact that only uncategorised posts will feature on the home page, still trying to find these last 2 things out and then I am all set to continue with the site.
