Lets say your trying to find a niche. Lets say you think "razor sharp scissors" (I just pulled that one out of my ass...and yes it kind of hurt) is going to be the one. So when you're trying to figure out if it's really a niche not, you look at things like the search volume adwords keywords and it shows it to be highly saturated. But then you type it in on google and there are like 3 ad displays total. What gives?

What is you location?

I think Google Adwords database works with US.

If you are not in US then I suggest you use a proxy located in US.
I think it works like this. try hidemyass . com

Then if I am wrong please correct me :)

You were skimpy in the details but...

High Search Volume != High Competition

Just because something is searched othen does not mean there will be lots of adwords ads. Maybe there is no money to be made, or you discovered a low competition niche.

Also using the adwords keyword tool you can pick and choose your region, no need for proxy. <-- really valuable info if you use it right. :D

I think she means that Google AdWords is saying theres high keyword competition (you know, that second bar to the right of the search volume) but, when she searches it, she sees like 3 ads.

I, too, am wondering this. Following...

Yes this is what I am talking about as well!

The adwords ads you get when you search something in google, are targeted to your location. Now, the adwords statistics (I think!) correspond to the US.

An example:
The keyword 'yellow cat' may be very competitive in US. That means the adwords statistics will show high competition. However you are not living in US, let's say you live in Italy. If you google that keyword, you will get the adwords, targeted for Italy. But 'yellow cat' is not competitive in Italy so you get 3 ads only.
At the same time if someone from US searches 'yellow cat' he will see a huge list of ads because it is very famous in US.

That is why you should use a web proxy is you are not living in US (if you are targeting the US market of course!).

That is my opinion :D and sorry for the shitty english.

That's right Krazy.

Also in answer to to one of the previous questions, I'm in the US.

Yeah I'm boggled. It may indeed be that alot of people search but not alot of people buy. It's not really a product its more informational ,but there is still some money to be made from informational videos and training ...etc.

I'll say it again. You don't need a proxy. The adwords keyword tool let's you pick the region. The adsense preview tool will let you pick region as well.
