I desperately want to get in to SEO but i am just overwhelmed by all the blogs/books/tools/information. If i may ask a question?! What tools could you not do without?? Thanks. I am talking legit long term stuff here please. Where is my money best spent and how should i get some practice??

Ok thanks, yeah i have used all of those before. So you think i can start off just using them and save my cash???? Will check the link.

good resource... thnx!! I think i am starting to see the bigger picyure now. I started off with a few keyword domains and all went smoothly with good results so i think my next exercise is getting used to the tools and link building. I have found that good site design goes a long way aswell...

Just spend your time looking at the competitive serps and reverse engineering what they do.

If you must have tools, anything comercial is just a used up whore ... so learn to hack! $10k worth of tools is worth less than 5 minutes of your brain working.

So be original!!??

1) Make sure you have your basic on-site SEO done.
2) Make sure you are in all the basic directories. (dmoz, yahoo, etc)
3) Make sure you're linked from all the relevant industry blogs / forums
4) Make sure you have all your web 2.0 and social media profiles setup with links
5) Make sure you send out a couple press releases and articles to the various article directories
6) Go out and find some unique untapped resources for links and use new link bait tactics
7) Tweak on-site SEO
8) Repeat 3 thru 7

Congrats! You're an SEO!

IM ON PAGE 1!!! And the site is a mess.. i forgot to upload my robots.txt and i still made it to number 6. This is a site i was on with a bit ago..

Quick question: i am using includes for my header etc... Is it worth going thru and using unique META tags for each page or one just in the include? Thnx.

Damn. I just found out my site is based in the US, went with a well known .co.uk host and the servers are in the US!! is there anything i can do to rank my US .com in the UK without switching hosts? What if i host the .co.uk domain in the uk and point it to my site?

Another quick one! How risque can i get in my meta description without risking not passing the moderate search filter. i know swearing will be out. Specifically i want to use the phrase 'your mum' :D Is that a good idea?

This is probably the best advice you've gotten in this thread so far...Which I will elaborate on a little bit.

On site SEO:
Permalinks - make sure your links come out like -> website.com/this-is-my-permalink

and not like -> website.com/post/2342

Also do a sitemap and it doesn't hurt to have a privacy policy / terms and conditions as google seems to enjoy those.

H1, etc. tags - anything with an h1 tag should have good keywords in it, use for post titles, page names, etc.

For social bookmarks check out onlywire or ping.fm - then you can autopost each page / post of your site to a whole bunch of sb sites at once. Pretty helpful. Kind of tedious to set up 30 accounts but if you're not making money do it yourself..or pay someone in BST, it usually costs like 8 bucks.

I like to check Page rank of blogs and such before trying to comment for links and go with the high pr ones, especially in the initial link building phase. These are nice and easy links that you can get quickly. Also try to be active on high PR forums in your niche, you should at the very least be able to get a link in the profile if not in your sig. And finally, bang out some UNIQUE articles, and rewrite and submit to a bunch of articles directories...i try to do at least a couple articles a week cause the directories are usually high pr, thus good for link/ link juice, and they also usually send some visitors your way naturally.

Sorry thats kind of a mess but hopefully it helps. Number one newb rule is to just start doing some shit, reading and dreaming are not productive so just start grindin.
