I run a free trial offer and am thinking of putting the shipping address first so the customer sees the auto-populated fields right away, and is more inclined to continue inputting his order. On the other hand I've heard that the billing address usually goes first and having the shipping first can throw off the customer. Has anyone dealt with this?

I've actually split tested this, conversions where higher when we asked for shipping first and then asked for the billing information. Obviously the most logical conclusion is that asking "where should we ship your free stuff?" doesn't make people think about making a payment or handing over money while asking for the billing information does.
Shipping first. Then have a box that is prechecked that says "Billing address is the same as shipping" then when they uncheck it, it shows the fields. This seems to be the most streamlined and keeps people focused on getting a solution vs thinking about billing
