Youtube videos are more convenient with their own player, and when people view them, it wont take up my bandwidth, but is it good for SEO purposes. What would anyone recommend?

Youtube is fine; if you name them accordingly and make use of the tagging feature/description

Depending on your niche, you might host your own videos (i.e. private video content to members), but more often than not - using Youtube, Vimeo, MetaCafe, etc. to host your videos is the better solution.

Not only do you get additional traffic to your site because it's on a searchable platform, but you are building your site's authority.

Use good Titles, tags, and descriptions. And link to your site in the description (It's nofollow, but you still get authority anyway). You'll come out well for doing that.

+1 for youtube for all the reasons listed above + it can save serious bandwidth

If you do not care about bandwidth or have option to host your video files on amazon S3 servers then hosting them on your own has the following advantage: ranking power.
It is much easier to rank a video than normal blog article. You would need to create special google video sitemap and submit it to google webmaster account. There are some tools out there to help you with that google for "google video sitemap" to find those.
