Singularity

I was talking with my girlfriend about this the other day. She fears the mixing of technology and human flesh, I embrace it. This is the next evolutionary jump.

As long as they don't try to make my new machine interface user friendly. I don't like user friendly.

I gotta side with the Revelations-fearing fundamentalists on this one:

Ain't nobody sticking no mark of the beast on me, goshdarnit!

*spit*

I don't mind bionic prosthetics, but I don't see the point for storing personal tracking or transaction information inside your person. Yes, it's easier for you to buy and sell or get rescued, but it's also quite easy for anyone to monitor you as well.

Has no one seen Minority Report?

...I don't see the point for storing personal tracking or transaction information inside your person.

Neither do the people that want to track you.

You already willingly pay for and carry a personal tracking device with you at all times.

What could be more perfect?

Exactly.

:p

But honestly, if I want to go off the grid, I want to have the option. I don't want to have to pay a few thousand to spoof or remove my tracking information with someone's "stolen" or spoofed body part id every time I decide to leave "civilization".

I think we need to figure the biology shit out a bit more first. We can't 'transcend' something we know fuck all about. We can't even cure a common cold, yet we think we can 'improve' biology.

I say fuck that shit. Gimmick.

I would like to know more about and try some enhanced learning technology if there were any good references on it. Read a little about it some time ago but didn't get far. I'm thinking that's going to be my edge against the singularity. I'll be able to stay ahead of it for a bit longer than all you mere mortals.

I got into this a bit a while back, watch this vid it goes over it well.

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uIzS1uCOcE"]Ray Kurzweil Explains the Coming Singularity - YouTube[/ame]

EDIT: I thought it was a different vid but it summarizes well anyway. For more, look up Ray Kurzweil (yes it's the same Kurzweil as the keyboard/K2000 etc) there are a few really in depth vids and he's on this shit better than Michio Kaku.

Technocalyps is a pretty good documentary on the whole subject.

Here's part 1 for anybody who's interested.

This article is mentioned in that video. Wired 8.04: Why the future doesn't need us.

It's a good read.

I think it will happen, but it just won't be as soon as all those old fucks hope it will be. We'll all be dead and gone before tech gets that advanced.

Is anyone else absolutely terrified by the prospect of self-replicating auto-assemblers?

The "grey-goo" scenario is so bleak and depressing, and I don't really see any way to defend against it.

I have mixed feelings about this, but I feel that the singularity is inevitable. Can any of you guys leave the house without your phone? How often are you on your laptop? Granted you're not attached to these devices physically but they are already in your day to day life almost every waking minute. It won't be long until we can interface directly to these devices physically.
