On the firing line
Up until now, I've never run an entertainment site. So, I'm running into issues with monetization. Here are my thoughts / questions:

Site is: Madd Gamez - Welcome to Madd Gamez

Currently have some Adsense and Adversal on it.

1. Whats the best popunder provider?
2. Is there a good ad serving software that offers insterstitial ad support also? Not Adengage or Adbrite, I'm looking for something that I can host and control.
3. If you have an entertainment driven site what do you recommend?

I really want to use interstitials as I feel they would be fairly effective. Popunders / popups are too easy to ignore as are banners. But if I had an interstitial ad pop up when they choose their game, they have no choice but to see the ad. Whether or not they act on it is a different story of course.

What's your experience with interstitials vs. popups?

Thanks!

I was never successful making decent money with the one I had so I sold it, its about massive amounts of traffic and private ads - I think

you could create your own interstitial ads with affiliate progams using lightbox scripting I believe

Well from a user standpoint, I personally am turned off by pop unders and chances are, if I'm planning to frequently use a website that uses them, I'll probably have something like admuncher turned on.

What I would recommend to you would be to take a look over at miniclip.com, which is one of the elders of mini game sites. Give a little interaction on your main page, maybe a "best game" or something for people to try out and get them anxious about digging deeper into your vault of mini games.

give globalinteractive a try for the popunders (don't mess with the CPM banners)
make sure you check what they're popping, I had to remove their code once since they were probably displaying crap and my visits were decreasing...
the second time btw I had no problems
I remember I made something more than what I did with adversal
for interstitial I use openads as for any other banner on my sites, it's the only ad server you'll probably ever need
I never used popups, too easy to block, but used to have a high CTR on interstitials before summer...let's just wait school begins to see what happens this year

Hey Mike,

Casale is known for good pop rates. I would suggest removing the required login before playing the games. Casual games are used to not having to login, so that could deter repeat visits.

Also, running pops that have no capping is really annoying for users.

Yeah, I'm not sure what's up with that login thing. I have it set so that if you play more that ten games, it requires signup. May have to remove that limit as well...

Thanks

What you have to think off is that there are hundreds of arcades on the web nowadays. Now if you had time and wanted to play a game, would you stay on a site that had popups or go to another arcade that don't have them. I know what I would do.

What about CPM programs? Entertainment sites are similar to proxies, and a lot of proxy owners are moving towards Canep Media (new company) for good CPM rates.

Also sell some text links on DP. You'll be amazed at how many you can sell. Proxy owners, image host owners, myspace site owners...all of them.

Then you could also try ringtones and smiley offers.

I've always found that Yahoo Publisher Network performs a lot better on entertainment sites than Adsense does, in terms of overall revenue.

Here's some stats from the last two days on YPN:

Date Ad Unit Impressions Clicks CTR (%) CPM* ($) Avg. RPC ($) Revenue* ($)

09/01/2007 1,072 5 0.5% $11.24 $2.41 $12.05
08/31/2007 878 4 0.5% $16.58 $3.64 $14.56

Now this is a pretty small site that I never touch anymore, but it still brings in between $12-15/day on average. You can see here I am averaging $2-3/click, which is nice.

If I replaced it with Adsense that would probably drop significantly. In other niches though adsense always outperforms...

I own an arcade site.

I can't help you with what you're asking about, but if you want to know how to pay too much money for an existing arcade, ignore it for months, and watch it dwindle away into an unprofitable, dreary nothingness - I can help. PM for details, I don't want to share my secrets with everyone.

well, you could go to revisitors.com, buy 100k uniques, pump up yr traffic stats, then post on some "site for sale" section and mention, 'lots of traffic, plenty of potential for development' and sell it to the next sucke, er, entrepreneur.

I've been thinking about setting up an arcade site for a long time, but the fact that the industry is so saturated has been holding me back. How easy/hard is it to drive traffic to a games site?

As for monetization, I would suggest displaying offers such as free xbox, free visa gift card, free ipod from Copeac or Azoogle right beside the game play screen, or as interstitials.

Any script recommendations?
Comments would be nice, registering players.. meh...

Need something that would work on shared hosting without killing the machine.
