Something I'm not understanding about keywords

I'm beginning to think I overthink a lot of stuff when it comes to AM. I've read a shitload of SEO articles and what not, but I'm still not 100% clear. When it comes to building your site around a certain keyword, for SEO, you're not actaully registering any keywords or anything, right? Just by putting the phrase in your title and peppered throughout your content, you're building your site around that keyword and therefore showing up when in the SEs when someone types your phrase?

It's just something about people saying "building your site around one keyword" makes me think that you're committing to that keyword and will only be found when someone types it.

One more question, so i don't have to make another thread. When split testing, are you just making a subdomain or are you purchasing a completely new domain?

Correct, there's no such thing as "registering a keyword."

You will register a domain (preferably with your keyword), include your keyword in H1 tags, copy, and so on, but there's no official registration or anything.

You choose your main keyword/s and go for them. If that doesn't work out or if you want to expand you can go for so called 'long tail keywords' (search it), which are easier to rank for. You want to target the keywords that people are likley to use when they are wanting to carry out your desired action. Does that clear it up? Split testing what?

then how come so many people say to come up with a list of 50 or so keywords? i don't understand how i can i put so many in my content and still keep it coherent. or do they just suggest that for split testing purposes. ie: target one keyword, if that doesn't work move onto the next one and so on?

and with split testing i just mean with everything. say i'm splitting up to different versions of ad copy or something. i don't understand how i'm testing them at the same time without purchasing another domain..

all right, i just found a domain with 12,000 per month search volume and about 25% competition. it obviously has to do with the product but it's kind of backwards. still buy it?

for instance, what is better:

golfswingadvice.com with 2,000 searches per month

golfingadviceswing.com with 12,000 search per month

the first sounds better but the second has more searches

Then see which one works better. Voila! Split testing. Then you will be wanting to concentrate on the winner and split test different landing pages.

that was my previous question. if i'm split testing different keywords in a certain ad copy, i don't need to buy a new domain, do i? whenever i read about split testing people are saying to spit test the tiniest of details, i'm obviously not buying new domains everytime. i just don't understand how you can test two different sites with the same domain at the same time..

that sounded retarded, lol.

You can rotate the pages automatically and track them if you set it up properly. Split testing ad copy is exactly as it sounds... two different ads and track their performance. If you are brand new at this watch you dont burn your cash without researching stuff...

I think you are over complicating a lot of this. Split testing just refers to basic differences to see what people respond to. So you can change your ad picture, your landing page title, and so on. How you do this is up to you - go real basic and try a new one each month (and obviously you need to record your data to see what works best) or use something like google's website optimizer which has multivariate testing and various other handy, nifty tools.

As far as keywords go you want to start out with one keyword (your main keyword, which you want to get in the domain name, such as golfclubs.com or whatever) and try to optimize for that. Then if you can get a good, competitive ranking for that keyword, move on to another related keyword. This is assuming you're doing seo work. If you are just doing pay per click (paid advertising) then you can target a whole bunch of keywords which is where I imagine you read about people using 50+ etc. keywords. Even then, you want to split test all these keywords to find the ones that actually convert and make you money.

I think you need to read more so check out the stickies in every section, the links, and so on..

Are you doing SEO or PPC? Your OP says SEO, so toss split testing and ad copy out of the window and get back to the drawing board. I would recommend reading all of the sticky posts here to get a feel for the difference between the two. VERY different strategies for promoting a site.

By the way, what do u mean by 25% competition? i am new at this too.
in the google keyword tool it gives you a bar graph of how much competition their is for a given keyword. and the bar was only at about 25% while the searches for that term were pretty damn high.

ahhhh, i thought split testing was done AT THE SAME TIME, not just changing stuff around. that makes a lot more sense actually.

surprisingly, i've read almost every sticky on this forum, but the info just hasn't stuck (pun intended)

i think i just get seo and ppc strategies mixed up. i want to start with seo because i just want to learn right now. i'm not at all upset if i don't make money, i just don't want to spend too much. thanks for the post though, very helpful.
