Split Testing for CPC?

So I am a SEO guy trying to get into PPC. Been trying out a few different campaigns, so far breaking even. Used Bidvertiser and 7search. What networks would you guys recommend?

But anyway my question is:
Can someone explain the split testing concept for CPC when using a direct affiliate link? (No landing page in between). Ok so if we are running a CPM campaign then obviously you need to split test to see what ad gets more clicks per 1000 impressions. But if you pay per click and the ad takes the user directly to the offer's website then does it matter at all?

Aside from that what factors to consider when running a PPC campaign? What distinguishes a profitable campaign from an unprofitable?

Thanks guys

split test everything.

with and without a landing page.
different landing pages.
same offer, on different networks.
different ad copy/headline/picture if you run of FB.
also you can have banners and bid CPC too.

and change those excuses of networks. You run with the worst of the worst.

what distinguuishes a profitable campaign from unprofitable one?

your ROI. If it is a positive value, than it is a profitable one. Nothing else matters really. Of course, if you are making 10%, you might consider doing something else, because your time costs money too.

Both don't allow direct affiliate linking as far as I know?

For the most part, not anymore. However, even if you happen to get a direct link through, usually the QS on the offer landing page is horrid, costing you even more money.

Do what momchil9 said and test everything. Landing pages often convert better then a direct linked campaign, since you control what you are selling now. Plus, with solid landers, your QS will be much better, making you more money too.

But to reiterate, you need to test everything single thing you do. With landers, use at least 3 different variations, even if you are just changing the color scheme. Ad copy should be a never ending test, especially since Adwords gives you a great tool to help optimize what works best for you.

As far as networks go, I only use Adwords and FB, though Bing is okay and POF has their own system that is strong for the right vertical.

Don't even try direct linking with Adwords...You'll get banned within a week.

Adcenter (Bing) are OK with almost everything, lolz

But their problem is traffic. Long tails are dead and general keywords don't convert. Go figure how to bid there.

This.

Copy your 7search/bidvertiser campaigns and run them elsewhere. 7seach/bidvertiser aren't exactly known for having good traffic.

Right, but what good networks beside bing and google would you recommend?
Or nobody is working with anything besides the 2?

I was looking for a network somewhere in the range with 10-15 cents per traffic. I am converting this one semi adult offer on one of the sites I own and I make about 30 cents per click. My traffic is legit, from search engines.

Is anyone using juicyads for adult offers?

It really depends on how semi adult you're talking, that factor will limit your options on a lot of networks. I'd give adbrite and media traffic a shot. Without knowing the nature of the offer, promotion method etc. that's just a shot in the dark though.
