I think most of the people who donated money towards this wouldn't have the skills to actually install and maintain it after it is released.

I think they like the general idea of having more control over their privacy but they don't realize that these guys idea just isn't feasible for the masses.

Correct me if im wrong (and I very well may be) but isnt the masses issue with facebook the fact that they collect, take control of, etc. your information. If these guys do what they say they are going to do, wouldnt that mean more privacy?

I guess I just dont understand how its not feasible for the masses. Curious.

when i see this i think linux

sure its more stable and secure, overall probably better. but the masses dont use it, and never will.

What I think about is Firefox that took a huge bite out of IE marketshare as well as open-access Internet that killed AOL walled garden.

This could be done, hope these guys figure out how to actually make it work.

Firefox can be installed within a few clicks, what they propose would take knowledge of hosting, or if they didn't wanna go that route - setting up their own machines to allow people to access their info, etc. Just won't happen.

I make a prediction that due to the massive donations they are getting they will change their gameplan and make whatever they are making easier for normal people to take advantage of.

extremly difficult undertaking that is being done is a very organized way. i have to commend them for it, even if it doesn't pan out (which i think it actually might).

I think it is possible but like most said I dont see how migrating to a new social net will change privacy. They are still pullin lists like a mofo

No matter how many Facebook killers start up, facebook will still have a strong user base. And normally, users only join up to these social networking sites because their friends are on it. If no one is on a new site, they wont bother to use it.

If they use the Facebook plugins, they could pull in most of a person's settings through Facebook's API and significantly lower the cost of changing for the user. This is what most web alternatives do in the corporate world to gain a user base from their competitor.

Once someone gets fed up with Facebook and they knew about this alternative, all they'd have to do is port their information over and then delete their Facebook account. This would bring in more people overall than them just starting from scratch, since most wouldn't leave Facebook from sheer annoyance of having to start over.

If they could find a way to comment to their friends from Facebook via the other social network, then that'd also significantly increase their chances of being a Facebook killer.

I think what's far more interesting is that site and how they got the money. That's not $100,000 of investment capital or loans, that's donations! Any funding you get on that site is donations only.

Hmmmmmmm

they would have raised at least half a million if they didn't start directing people to other projects. As it stands they will end up with around 200k . Pretty decent for something most people think is going to be a difficult undertaking.

For this thing to work it needs to be installed in like 2-3 clicks in under 5 minutes, have the most simple interface of all time, and have extensive viral promotion (like facebook did) I hope they take some of that money and hire brillant UI folks

i think they should wait until the next gen of "cloud OS"es comes (next-next windows?). then everyone has their shit in the cloud and could host from there. prediction: new facebook built into first cloud windows. ms isn't down yet.

Great idea. But those guys really should have focused on getting laid this summer instead.
