This has always confused me about America and money. How is it a penny when you have cents?

Are the phrase's simply interchangeable.

(only joking about the " ' " machinecontrol).

All our coins have specific names:

Penny - 1 cent
Nickle - 5 cents
Dime - 10 cents
Quarter - 25 cents
Half Dollar - 50 cents
One Dollar - a Buck - 100 cents

If you had 4 quarters you'd say "I have a dollar (or a buck) in quarters". Not "I have a dollar (or a buck) in 25 cent pieces".

Weird though when your handling change you tend to count it out to the person, or then count it out to you, in cents. Situation, your digging through you pants pocket for correct change (lets say 41 cents) you might say "25..35..40.. and a penny". When you receive your change, normally if anything only the bills are counted back to you, if you had 58 cents in change the person would say "And your change is 58 cents."

Fucked up huh?
