To link or not to link

Hi all,
After getting rather displeased with my webdesigner/seo-”expert” I decided to take the plunge and learn how to do this myself so I can make it exactly as I want.
I only know the most essential basics, and after joining the forum, I found out that I don't even know a lot of the jargon like blogfarm, linkbait or the difference between whitehat and blackhat. (Yes, I am THAT green)

Where should I go to learn what I need to know and if half possible without getting bogged down with a whole lot of stuff that is either not really relevant, or only makes a minor difference?

Hi, and thanks for helping a newbie.
My rather new and modest website has a limited number of links, some done by by myself, and a number done by a cheap link provider.
As I have my doubts about the quality and knowledge of my “consultant”, I have bitten the bullet and dedicated part of my working hours to learn what I need to know.

Q1. I suspect that a number of the links that I “bought” have created a weighting of certain pages for which the links were designed, that ranked well quite quickly, but are for search terms that are very rarely used. It seems that the pages I wrote for very popular searches have actually gone down in ranking since the other links were added. Is this coincidence, or can links “in the wrong place” actually lower my site for popular searches?

I have personally done live research, and I know what the most popular searches are that local people use to find the service that my site is aimed at (cantral heating/boiler repairs).

Q2. Are there any sites or other good places to start learning about linking?

Thanks,

Ben

Hey bro. Wrong section. This sub-forum is for sales only. Feel free to ask in the "Shooting the Shit" sub-forum. Thanks!

~Robert.

My only advice for you is to start searching for what has already been posted here. Read the stickied threads at the top of the newbie section.

Read some stuff, try some stuff. Rinse and repeat.

Don't be afraid to fail.

Guys sorry to burst your bubble but link building will not guarantee search engine rankings and it will not even give you great traffic (though it may). In terms of how important it is in SEO, it becomes of interest only if you want to get your PageRank (PR) up but that is only an issue if you are selling advertising. PageRank has nothing (absolutely nothing!!!) to do with where you are placed on the search engine rankings. Sites with PR 0 routinely beat PR7 websites when their relevancy is greater. The post here is 'How Link Building Helps' so here's what link building actually does:
  1. Links, over time, help to increase a website's public PR
  2. Links help a website get indexed better and they help individual pages be found
  3. Links may bring in extra traffic, over time, though it is highly unlikely that a single link will bring more traffic than a well-placed keyword on Google's Index
  4. Links help create authority websites (over time anbd depending on the quality of the links themselves)
And that's it. If you want traffic to come to your website you need to have a coherent, logical SEO campaign in place which will include search engine marketing (SEM), link-building, social media optimization (SMO) and link building. Do any of these on its own and it is trying to run a marathon on one leg.

Fantastic stuff, thank you so much.
With a bit of luck, this will not only help me, but also assist others in finding it.

I'll help you for free. Pm me all of your questions.

Great stuff, you really made my day.
I will do my best to formulate my questions as precise as I can, in order to take up as little of your time as possible.
Maybe this proves that what goes around, comes around. I have helped hundreds of people on forums in my field of expertise (various kinds of engineering e.g gas and electric), and it sounds like the favour will be returned.

Sounds like the guy is just getting caught up with unnecessary acronyms. "Link building" is all you need. You just need to do it right!
