Trust stickers on the checkout page

I've read that having those SSL/"good business" trust stickers on the checkout page helps boost conversions a little because they help boost buyer confidence. Problem is they are so damn expensive; my friend who owns an e-commerce store recently paid $895 for verisign after haggling them down from $1600 (and that's per year)

I was thinking of making my own stickers, but I'm in an industry where that would be a risky idea.

Are there any free stickers out there? Any very cheap ones?
 


It wouldn't do you any good to make it up. It will look shadier than no stickers at all. You pay for those stickers (badges) because they test your website to make sure it is secure they don't just give them for fun.
 
I use fake stickers all the time. Psychologically they work however I wouldn't use them based on the notion that I was dealing with sophisticated customers but for rebills and crap like that, go for it.
 
People putting up fake ones do it for the same reason that people use the "As seen on CBS" stickers. As LotsofZeroes says, it boosts consumer confidence in your site.

So it's up to you: Trick a few extra morons into buying crap you're pushing and potentially get your arse reamed by the companies that DO hand them out.... or not.
 
wait - are you talking about physical stickers that you want to put on a box of something or are you talking about the graphics that people have on websites?

if you're talking websites you grab the secure graphics from another site and split test them on your page. If your revenue increases fantastic - now you get to decide on whether or not you want get legit or not.

having those graphics on a checkout page can be extremely beneficial - when someone has their credit card in their hand they want to feel good about the transaction.

My advice would depend on what you are promoting like others said. If it is a long-term deal then I wouldn't do it but if its rebills or something else slightly shady then might as well. Just start a small .org website and make it a website that rates others and then put the badge from that website onto yours and boom done. It will of course convert much better.
