*I have been using a reseller account for the last six weeks and I'm not happy with the up time. Basically, I'm going to be doing some stuff that requires storage and I want my pages loading quickly for visitors.

With that out of the way: I need some advice regarding unmanaged hosting. Obviously, I'm drawn to it for the price factor. More importantly I want to make sure I'm getting the best bang for my buck.

I'm a smart guy, but not a server admin. Am I setting myself up to get royally fucked going with an unmanaged VPS? I've done my share of Googling to, but I'd love to get some opinions here. Some say it's really easy, others say to pay double for the managed and have peace of mind.

Please "push me" in the appropriate direction. I'm more than willing to learn; but what I'm wondering is if I can learn as I go, or am I being cocky?

I would be doing everything as cheaply as possible, with DirectAdmin.

Good question, and I'm going to have to say that the terms "managed" and "unmanaged" really depend on the hosting company you choose.

there are unmanaged VPS' where everything is done from ssh (logging in, installing php/mysql, opening ftp ports, installing backup apps/crons, you get the drift) - completely unmanaged.

Then I've seen unmanaged where all you need to do is put in a support ticket - and they will install/do everything for you - from setting up special apps, to installing wordpress or prosper for you, and handing you off with the username/pass to just go. (24/7 support by the way).

I personally - used managed dedicated servers from The Planet, they have yet to do me wrong - but I would not take a chance with a VPS; managed or unmanaged or shared hosting due to the nature of the business I conduct online. The bill may be a bit higher - but nothing beats peace of mind when you know you have full backups, and dedicated account reps a phone call away around the clock.

Besides - even if you do have a technical background (which I am pretty well versed with the geeky-ness) - we are not really here to focus on getting DirectAdmin working or php/mysql setup - its just taking away from time that could be spent building money sites/campaigns.

My last piece of advice is that - shared hosting is good for fucking around, beginners, etc. When you have a website making money - you would be a fool not to move your money sites to a stable, reliable, well-known host with 99.9% (or whatever the fuck) uptime and reported/documented outages so you can see the trail.

Give me a call when she has actually shaved within the week (and not missed the top of her ass hole). Butt acne and lack of proper shaving skills != innocence for everyone. I think it = gross.

PS - who the fuck comes to a porn shoot in this condition? I don't even go out to the club without making sure my balls are shaved first.

Yeah JD! She's hot as hell, but I have to agree with her shaving skills. If she could hit the wax joint now and again, it would be hard to find a flaw.

Thanks for your input KaniGT5. While my traffic is coming up, my $ isn't there yet. I hear what you mean about hosts and their definition of managed/unmanaged.

I'm the type of guy that will spend a few hours trying to figure something out myself, before bothering anyone for help. Security is my biggest concern I suppose. I don't want my noob ass to "f" something up and leave myself open to hacking -- but at the same time, I may be over-complicating something that isn't out of my realm also.

Check out the guides at these sites.

Slicehost Article Repository - VPS setup, servers, Ruby on Rails, Django, PHP, DNS, Slicemanager and more
Linux VPS Guides and Technical Articles - Linode Library

They walk you through the initial VPS setup and the installation of common services. It'll give you an idea of what you're up against.

I personally use linode.com. I love the control I have and the cheaper price. But at the same time I've spent hours troubleshooting something when I should've been running new campaigns.

If anyone sees this post and knows unmanaged hosts who will offer limited support with setup: Feel free to plug away.

*I'm on the Zensix email list (could be waiting forever).
*Volsh has some nice prices, but their copy leads me to believe they don't want newbs running on their unmanaged VPS.

Thanks for that thread Uptime. The cheap side of me is always whispering: "You get what you pay for". It's a bugger having a small budget.

. . . While my traffic is coming up, my $ isn't there yet. I hear what you mean about hosts and their definition of managed/unmanaged . . .

This is me including currently outgrowing the reseller accounts. Please update on which way you end up rolling. Thanks.
