Using symbols in Google Local Listings

I am currently trying to improve some local listings in google maps and was wondering if anyone knew whether using symbols like this --> ø ø was a good idea ? . I have not noticed anyone really doing it...

yeah, blue hat seo writes about that.

I use them for my sites, since they catch the eye. But they wouldn't add much if you don't already have a catchy title/description.

I've never seen any downside to using them.
