would you need before it makes sense to buy the 2-word keyword domain and make a small site? i've been finding a lot available domains with 15,000 monthly searches. i'm wondering it's worth pursuing..

I'd base it on what the price of that 2-word phrase is in adwords. That should give you a rough idea of how valuable the traffic would be then you can decide if it's worth it to you.

ah shit, i had it on broad. i didn't even see that option.

the search volume for these is much lower now :(

I think I'm going to pick one and give it a shot. Do you think I should make a 5-page mini site for it, or just park it and wait for type-ins?

Google likes exact-match .coms these days, so definitely a mini site. You don't even need that many pages. But they won't rank a parked domain, at least not that I've seen.

At 1,000 to 5,000 exact match searches you're not actually doing that badly; I regularly pick up domains with less volume than that and do well off of basic content sites. Just bear in mind that not all search terms are money terms -- before you register the domain you need to have a product/service in mind to promote on it.

what about just using adsense?

most of these are travel related domains, so i'm guessing the CPC would be pretty decent

try domain tasting with godaddy. that should do the trick. I've had a typo of a keyword with more than a million searches according to google keyword tool, but after 4 days, it came as a dud. taste 'em before you buy 'em.

Travel is a highly competitive vertical ... are they kw+geo or kw+kw?

Not a big fan of AdSense or other contextual link ads; although people do still make money at it I think that the golden age is long gone. Basically good for building something "just above parking page" level.

If they are kw+geo travel-related there is a lot more you can do with them, without a lot of work, to tailor to the local and incoming market, and going directly with travel affiliate programs, especially for airfare and hotels, can make signficantly more money than AdSense.
