I always make my own keyword lists. I use the Google keyword tool for ideas, but the lists always end up with 100% by me.

Excel formulas make this super quick, took me 10 minutes to have over 1k keywords typed out this morning.

Do you guys include broad terms along with longtail ? like cigars and how to smoke cigars ? or do you try to concentrate on longtail ?

Is the $80/month fee for Keyword Spy worth it? The website looks pretty promising. The ability to know ALL your competitions keywords is sleezy and disgusting, which is why I'm thinking of signing up.

I was a subscriber and cancelled because I felt that the data I was getting were not accurate.

my 2 cents

Best Idea is to sign up for all the free trials. If there is a research tool without a free trial then they will have a 30- 60 day money back guarantees depending on the vendor, so you can use their cushion period to evaluate the product in depth. I did this until I found which tools I felt were the best for my research strategy and then bought accordingly. If you do it this way before you buy for real you will be getting all the research you need done during that period for free. So it is important to plan what you want to find out before you start to buy these tools or get the free trials so when you do, you make efficient use of your time.

Remember ..time is money!

I'm a fan of:
Google trends
Google insights
Compete
Quantcast
Alexa
CrazyEgg
PPCBully
MSN Ad Intelligence

That basically sums up what I like to use for trending and research. The best thing you can do is get in the head of the demographic. So I also like to ask family and friends what offers they would fill out. What ad copy they like the best. Most appealing web site... etc.

No, it's an outdated, inaccurate piece of shit.

I like all of them but I only ever use them once, when I start researching a niche. Complete waste of money reallly.

I also have serious doubts about their ability to truly get data. If I can hide from them then my competition probably can too.

Campaign Sniper looks promising though. At least I only pay per report. I've got a few reports in the works. Anyone using it yet?

From what I've read it's best to come up with your own list. Think of what you and others would search for when searching for the product you're pushing. Then start a campaign and watch which keywords are converting the best. Is this right so far? any further insight?

I actually meant to say that too. The best KW tools are really just google.com + your brain.
