When a post ranks for main KW

So a while ago I posted about a site of mine that im messing around with and a KW dropped off charts, but has popped back in and out a few times. Inner pages rank pretty decently without any links, hover around 20 or so with some tender linking.

So anyhow, I check my email and I have a blog post I put up months ago now showing out of nowhere at 60 for the main KW of the home page.

Im cock blocked for it on the home page and cant really figure out why.

Pretty vague I know but anything I should look at?

Areas Im struggling with are user generated tags. Currently there are 240 tags and in a year I will probably have 500 or more. Im not sure what to do about it, so I no followed them. Yoast has a plugin that organizes and 301's them when appropriate. Thumbs up or down on that?

I never bother no-following tags or categories. I'd rather have as many pages as possible taking up the SERPs. If I nofollow a tag, that doesn't mean another page of MINE is going to take it's spot, it just means another page on the internet. What I like about tags ranking is it tells me Google likes my site for certain tags and I should create content around that tag to get a particular post ranking. When you nofollow pages, you are essentially making the 'net' you cast out into the internet ocean, smaller. I actually thought it was a troll when people started no-following tags, but I guess this is like real advice for some reason.

If someone can prove I'm wrong, that when you nofollow a tag, it will guarantee it ranks YOUR SITE instead of someone else, then I'll be happy to take back the comment... Doubt that will happen though.

Also, it sounds like your blog post is more relevant to Google than your main home page. Shit happens all the time, your home page really shouldn't be ranking for a keyword if a post is more relevant. You might also have to consider that your homepage maybe flagged to a degree or have a partial over-optimization flag? Did you look in Google WMT (Webmaster Tools) for it? Is your anchor ratio too high?

Thanks CC, the anchor is down to 7% from 17%, but another one has popped up pretty high , ill work on that. GWT looks ok. Assuming it is anchor % woudnt the site be unable to rank for it all together, or is it page by page?

I thought I just read something somewhere, from who knows who, that it may be best to no follow the tags if there are a bunch and they are similarly related. I will have to look around on that.

Sounds like an over-optimization penalty, you probably need to increase your KW anchor diversity. Personally I would switch as many links as you can to naked links and brand links, then build some more of those to water it down further.
