What is the difference between a result that is just the tld and a result like xyz.com/this-page-is-keyword-relevant ?

I have started with a niche that isnt extreemely competitive (like poker or adult or something) but there definitely is some competition in general. Looked like something I could get my feet wet in.

The top result is a page from a site with a ton of backlinks. A pretty major site (not a google or yahoo, but big and established). Is it different because the top result isn't xyz.com? The page compared to the site is pretty weak SEO wise, from what I can see.

I have checked makemonies for answers but it just keeps taking me in circles.

One possibility is that the major site interlinks their pages wikipedia style. So even though the individual page doesn't have much going for it, the fact that the rest of the site is linking to it (with relevant anchor) makes that page rank.

If you are saying that the high ranking URL has the keywords in it, then
that is your answer. If you are not saying that, then I don't know what
you are saying. :D

It's the most relevant page on that site to that particular search. Or at least that's what it sounds like from your description.

The difference is simply that his certain post page is ranking fairly well in the search engines due to his domain having some what of an authority.

So it shouldn't really be that hard to beat.
