It looks like if I want to take my blog seriously I should use wordpress.org. Under the cons listed on their site is that I have to manage my own hosting which will be unreliable if I get a traffic spike with digg w/e. What should I expect to pay for hosting and where should I look for that. Is it not worth the hassle... should I just use wordpress.com?

If you are really serious about your blog then you will definitely going in for the self hosted platform of Wordpress (wordpress.org) also that gives you more flexibility and control over your content and branding you site.

Hosting is damn cheap now, check out shared hosting packages at HostGator starting at $5/month & once you are really get loads of traffic to your site the buy a VPS or a dedicated server and monetize.

Don't let something like Digg traffic keep you from hosting it yourself. There are tons of plugins you can get for wordpress like Super Cache, which will generate static html pages to serve in the event you get a spike in actvity.

Yes go with wordpress.org, and HostGator find a coupon on google. and get a cheap domain at namecheap.com. Not that difficult.
