Favicons ?

I just want to ask if you think favicons help any. I mean are they just a bunch of eye candy or do they really help to get people to remember your site.

Assuming you use a decent image and not a dick or something, using one could help and probably couldn't hurt. Depending on the site it could: help people remember, further promote your brand, make your site seem more legitimate, etc... + what allco said about bookmarks.

Yes they help. They give your site a sense of legitimacy. If you have a site that you plan on keeping for a long while, I'd definitely suggest using it. Besides, you can make one and add it in like 20 mins or less.

I put one on all of my sites. 1yerrot is right about it adding legitimacy. Just use Dynamic Drive- FavIcon Generator and it's done in about 20 seconds.

Yeah modern browsers will request for favicon.ico so you will return 404s if it's not there.

well they do help i think...

for me it goes like this :

- i have some 50+ sites that i have to access daily so every time i cannot type the url so i book mark them on my mozilla but on the bookmark bar you cannot make the whole name display if we do so there would be less space and we cannnot see all the sites in one shot so this favicon helps me there...
- on my book mark bar i have 50+ favicons so i identify the sites from the favicons only like the gmail favicon is and easy identity for it so goes for many other site...
this way really favicon helps me a lot saving lot of my time and i use them as the brand mark for perticualr sites...

it creates both static/animated option .... wonder if chrome/ie would support animated favicons in the near future
