Making Monies Online and Traveling the World?

...and don't forget if you're from the US, if you spend something like 330 days of a tax year out of the country it's mostly buh bye to federal income taxes.
DID NOT KNOW THIS!!! Awesome info, I'm in the caribbean and I aint NEVER goin back to the States! This is the life, now I gotta take advantage of the legal tax benefits! You learn something everyday!

Don't even get me started on the girls. They are much better here in every way. Asia FTW.

Spoken by someone who knows. I moved from the U.S. to Thailand 9 years ago. If I ever go back it will be in shackles or a box, not voluntarily.

How do you all get around visa stuff? Do you just get resident permits/long term tourist visas? How open with the local gov't are you about your online monies?

Visas can be an issue. You can marry a Thai and renew your visa yearly without ever leaving the country. If you are over 50 a retirement visa is very easy. Otherwise it's an issue as there are limits on tourist visas. A business visa is just not viable if you are working for yourself doing AM as it requires a ridiculous investment to set up a business. Permanent residency is very difficult to get and a complete ripoff anyway to annual renewal of non-immigrant "O" or "B" is the way to go. Some countries have much friendly visa rules, like Malaysia I believe.

All my money is earned by my U.S. based businesses and taxes are paid there.

Word of warning: My advice to most guys is don't move here. Most of you will get totally owned by the bars and bar girls.

I believe you're exempt from federal income tax for the first $90k or so. I don't think the exemption applies to Socialist Security taxes. Consult an accountant/lawyer.

Hey Geo,

I'm a USAer who spent several months in Thailand but could never acclimate to the heat... Especially in BKK where the pollution took it to another level... Koh Samui was the most comfortable for me but still made me sweat all day and all night.

What's the secret?

Problem for U.S. citizens is it doesn't matter where you make your money or if you are a resident of another country or even a resident of no country you still pay U.S. taxes. Even if you renounce your U.S. citizenship they still demand you pay taxes for 10 more years. Un-f'ing-believable, isn't it?

I think the 10 year rule was recently removed.

"The United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS) says on their “Foreign Earned Income Exclusion” page that as of 2008 US citizens can exclude from their income up to $87,600 if they meet certain requirements."

Up to a specific amount..so it's just a big deduction.

The secret is to only wear basketball shorts with tank tops/sleeveless tee.

Only wear thin shoes (chucks, slip-ons, crocs-eww) or just slippers.

Sources: I live in Malaysia just south of Thailand.

Move to the mountains. It's cooler and dryer year round. People are usually hung up on the beaches, which are gorgeous and all, but it's too damn humid to live there, just visit like a tourist now and then.

Also, you do adjust somewhat after a while so you can actually dress respectably when you go into town. You get a lot better service from the locals than if you dress like clyde mentioned - might not matter in Malaysia but in Thailand if you look nice and respectable you get great service.

Travel, travel, travel! Since staring is this racket, I've hit 35 countries and have a bunch more on tap this year.

I think traveling and experiencing different cultures holds a lot more worth than buying depreciating assets, but just an opinion.

They only ever cared about my green stacks.

Money = adulation in the 3rd world. This is not London, people don't care about fashion. If you drove down in a Murcielago what kind of pants you have on is the least of their concern. HAHA. I dress up when I go out at night or to the malls though, but not when I'm going to be outdoors all day.

Sweating balls ain't cool!

Hmm.. I didn't really notice it in Chang Mai, I was there for a week and even stood up on top of the Doi Intranon thingy... They said they get 'frost' up there in the wintertime though so I guess I just didn't notice it.

I noticed that... What is it with their clothes-worship there??

-I kinda doubt I'll ever be able to wear them in BKK though, it's just to damn hot! :angryfire:

Asia is awesome. But im a huge fan of south america, the language issue is alot better as Spanish covers you everywhere.

Remember, there is never a right time to leave... So just leave... Your day to day expenses will at least halve if you head to a 3rd world country.

Yeah, the language issue. You'll never know life outside the tourist areas without a decent knowledge of the language. Thai is way harder than Spanish and useful in only one country. So if you're young and keeping your options open ROI would point to learning Spanish well. Then hit a lot of Latin American countries. Besides the legendary women of Venezuela, Argentina and Brazil, keep in mind that Chile is becoming a hot bed for international startups.

been thinking about doing this too. Perpetual travelling ftw.

How do you guys stay productive while on the road? I've been hitting up different countries but noticed that even though I mostlybring my 2nd 19" display with me, productivity goes to shit.

Yep, and use the pool often. it's really not a big deal, everywhere you go there's air conditioning. And this is coming from someone who hate's the heat.

I LOL'd that you explained where Malaysia is for the geographically challenged. I'm originally from California, north of Mexico and south of Oregon. haha. Living in KL now. Where abouts are you? In KL?

@Geo- No shit. I'm relatively new here, just popped my 1st year cherry in southeast asia, but I doubt I'll ever move back. I've met guys who have been here over 20 years and love it. What's your favorite town/city/beach in thailand, if you can name just one. I'm thinking about moving to Thailand next year, but that's right around the time I plan to open my own office which will be in the Philippines because of the low costs and fluent english. I'm sorta debating between thailand and philis. I need to go check out thailand first, before I decide.

We need to organize some sort of Affiliate Summit South East Asia or something. There are a lot of IM guys out here.

also, health insurance and postal addresses. How do you guys manage that while on the road? There's always stuff that still needs to be mailed to you, regardless where you are (lets say a new credit card) and you won't be changing your address with amex every 2 days.

Thanks!
