I am in. I have been meaning to start a little site related to a forum for a while, but I haven't, so here's my kick in the pants. :)

I may be slow getting going, though.

So another question... how are we going to make money with this blog? I don't see how I can incorporate AdSense ads or anything? Sorry for the lame questions, but this is my first time with any type of blog...

Wordpress allows you to create themes and plugins to change the look & feel of your site,

Here is a quick example I put together in a few mins

chefbuddy.info

ignore the content etc.. look at adplacment

Get some content first. If you are using wordpress you can get the adsense plugin. It will work for more than just adsense too.

to the wordpress newbies: whatever wordpress templates you get... make sure it is widget-enabled and has nice ajax-sidebars. this way you save yourself the need for manual coding of required modifications to the sidebars.

you might not even know at this stage what i am talking about, but when chosing a template by its looks, please ensure, that you pick a widget-enabled one ;)

My guess would be that he is attempting to help people capitalize on what he expects searchers to be seeking by the time everyone's blogs get up to speed. I don't think that the overall experience would be hindered by concentrating your blogs' niche on something else. But that's my guess. I had a few niche ideas sitting on the back burner for a couple of months with domains intact and this gives me a kick in the pants to get them up and off the ground.

I'm up for doing this. I am confused as well about the topic though - once 3 months rolls around, where is the interest in winter anymore?

I will wait for an explanation though instead of jumping to conclusions.

I think Jon was just throwing some niche ideas out there in to give people an idea of what to look for in picking out a niche. You are right, by the time your blog is getting some good traffic winter may be over, so you might want to look along the same lines for summer (sunscreen, swim suits, surf reports, surf gear, picnic, etc...).

jon can you please comment on importance of picking a seasonal theme versus any old niche?

As for the seasonal theme...just pick something that looks good. It doesn't have to be seasonal. I have always found that one of the most important things in making a blog look targeted to the content and unique, is by creating a good image header.

Check out this blog. Standard template with a custom header: Electronics, Gadgets, Devices, Reviews and Prices. uCrave.com

Yeah, I am pretty sure he just means a niche - and a niche can be seasonal.

Mine isn't seasonal at all, but very niche and totally related to a current site of mine, which should give it some nice juice. :)

interested in seeing how to build traffic - as of now my only active money making campaigns are arb.

Have a great niche though - one of my pages that has a 70%+ CTR on a large number of clicks a day...too bad it doesn't pay out more than .20/click, but I still make money on it.

It would be nice taking things back a step instead of rushing along like I have been. I have some sites being built for me now and any ideas for building up their traffic would be great!

okay guys - i have a drupal site but it lacks keyword focus in the articles. i've been thinking about converting to wordpress and making it more bloggier. i've got about about 25 handwritten articles - not a lot. would this be worthwhile for this project? the site doesn't really have many backlinks and is pr0 so i'm still kinda starting it from scratch.

I think that would be a perfect place to start. Just my opinion. Go with wordpress. It doesn't even need to be a blog. I've used wp for all kinds of "sites" just because with a few layout tweaks, you have a website that's 90% "seo friendly."

Okay then if it can be any old niche...I'm about to launch a community site, blogs/forum/chat/video for a niche. Would that count? My blog on there is going to be strictly news driven for that niche.

Pick the right theme

A tip for WordPress newbies participating in this project - all themes are not created equal. Realizing that from the beginning will save you a lot of frustration. Choosing the wrong WordPress theme can be very limiting (and time-consuming) for a WordPress beginner.

I've helped out several new bloggers who ran into trouble because the WordPress themes they selected wouldn't accommodate their monetization goals without some major tweaks. One of the biggest mistakes made by new Wordpress users is believing that switching themes just alters the way your blog looks. In actuality, a theme combines visual and functional components.

Don't choose a theme just because you think it's pretty - instead, look for the features and functionality that will best serve your needs. No matter what theme you choose, you can always swap out the header image or play around with the color scheme.

Off the top of my head, here are a few questions to consider when selecting a theme:

1. Does the sidebar appear on every page or just the main index page?

2. Will the theme accommodate ad units in multiple areas? Is the content area wide enough for a 468px banner or can it be widened without having to alter background images in Photoshop?

3. Does it have separate "main index" and "single post" templates that can be manipulated independently?

4. Does the architecture of the theme fit your needs? Are you happy with the number of sidebars and how they are positioned?

Obviously with a little time and effort, any of these things can be customized, but choosing the right theme will speed things up so you can focus on content and marketing.
