I'm thinking about doing some marketing for local companies in my area and just wanted to know what others do when the customer asks them what ad networks they'll be using to market their services on.

I mean, it's not like they can't eventually ask their new lead/customer to find out how they came to them but I wonder if most marketers keep quiet on this matter when asked by the business.

What do you do?

Tell them - tell them everything and anything you do. They have no clue how to duplicate it even if you spent a week walking them through it exactly - well unless you yourself suck at what you do.

Having them try to go around you to duplicate your campaign and cut you out is the last problem you will have with local customers.

Care to expand on that? I'd like to know if there's ways to protect myself with these local companies who might think doing it themselves is the best idea.

The thing with local businesses is they ALWAYS want to do things themselves with people they are paying in house. I usually find that you should give them enough information to answer their internal questions but keep things vague. I know you'll get the people that say tell them everything and if they want to try it theyll try it, fail and come back later. It sounds nice but its not real life.

Local businesses are stupid as hell. They will try to replicate what you do (really really poorly), completely fail and often times not even realize they failed or not want to admit it so they'll never come back. In local i find if you lose a client, no matter how dumb the reason you can NEVER get them to come back.

Good post. I try to help people, and I think I may be hurting more than helping. Coffee is for closers.

So for local SEO... how many of you buy links?

Lets take your average car insurance agent or dentist, how many links do you buy?
