Quick question for you guys. I know everyone on here seems to love the shit outta WP for doing landing pages and whatnot. But let's assume I wanted to do something a bit different than "blog type" content and not necessarily have just a landing page right now. Something more along the lines of a static page and having links to articles and whatnot. Something where people may not necessarily be able to comment like on a blog.... Is there something else that would be a more practical solution?

FWIW I'm using HostGator at the moment. I'm also not super savy with regards to building websites....Seeing as how this is my first and all, and other than knowing where to locate some tutorials I know shit about html code. BUT I'd like to think I might be able to figure something else like Joomla for example out. Would something like Joomla actually work for what I'm looking to do? If so what the hell do I do with the setup I have currently? Meaning I had to DL WP to my website how do I go eliminating that and installing something like Joomla to handle the content? Do I just DL it to the same place and Joomla will replace WP or is there something else I would need to do?

I was actually surprised by how easy it is to customize a WP template. You can take out the commenting functionality by eliminating a few lines of code in your theme file. Like forreal, just go in to wp-content/themes/your-theme/ and start messing with shit and see what happens.

Like the above poster, go learn a bit of basic html/css and try to understand how php includes work. If you ever get stuck you can always reference to codex.wordpress.org

But if time is scarce and you have funds to spare, just hire someone off odesk to do it for you.

in my opinion WP is the easiest CMS to tweak, If you don't know anything about programming that's the way to go.

Joomla is way more complicated to manage and to customize.

If you knew perfectly both the CMSs you'd be able to build the same website using any of the two, but since you don't know WP nor Joomla, you have far better chances of achieving a good result with WP.

if you want to replace wp with joomla you can do it easily

if you have installed it from fantastico just go to fantastico within HG CPanel and uninstall it, done that install WP from there

if you have installed it manually just wipe the containing directory from your FTP client or CPanel file manager (faster option), delete all the tables in the database and you're ready to start over

Alright as per much of the advice on here I'm going to try to stick it out with WP for a bit. I'll have to spend some time going through the themes and seeing what kind of fits the bill for me. I did DL one theme last night, problem is when I put my header up it has some black in it, and it covers the wording within the header. I guess I'll play around with it for a few more days till I nail something down. I'm using this site as more of a learning site at the moment anyway. I'm not even focusing on how to monetize it in any way. Just trying to get a handle on what the hell I'm doing. I'm looking to make more like an informational site, not so much a blog site... If that makes any sense.

Right.... So thanks for the advice, and I'll have to monkey around with some different templates in WP.

WP Themes and Joomla Skins

So, has anyone looked at Artiseer to skin your WP or Joomla sites? I have used it in the past for a Joomla 1.5 site and it removes the need to use a skin or theme that doesn't quite fit what you need.

That said, you seemed to have a question about WP / Joomla install / uninstall. If you are using Hostgator, they should have Fantistico in your cPanel. With this, you should just be single clicking to install or uninstall most common blogs and CMS installations.

Good luck. Once you get the hang of wordpress it's really easy to use. And very customizable if you know what you're doing. I'm sure you will be fine.

Wordpress is great because the community is so large. For example, there are a number of themes that aren't blogstyle at all and more of a traditional CMS style.

You could use joomla or even drupal, but if you're just starting off I think it's best to go with the biggest CMS out there and that's far and away wordpress.

Yep gotta love wordpress. I use it for business sites as well as blogs. Very easy to use compared to HTML and most other platforms.

wordpress is great to use, have the large community, many plug in to use that will be really helpful in seo, sales, etc. even we can create plugin that we want.
