Best and Safest way to check for a new unused domain name?

What's the safest way to check for a domain name?

I understand that some folks can monitor the Network tools one.

Can they monitor the various registrars searches?

And what is the current best place to register a name?
 


Whois.net

Dont ever check a domain with a registar cause sometimes they will take it and then try to sell it back to you for a super duper inflated price should you decide you want it. Sucks.
 
You can also use nameboy.com for ideas. Just type in you keywords and they give you several pages of domains and what is or isn't available. Only problem is sometimes their database says that a domain is available and it really isn't. But at least your not searching for a particular domain, so their not going to register all the suggested ones behind your back.
 
I've never lost a domain using https://www.instantdomainsearch, just make sure you use the https header. I wouldn't recommend checking domain names with any of the registrars directly. Whois.net appears to be safe, but the site is run by a registrar that I believe has been accused of unethical business practices in the past. Also, when I can't find a dot com I want, I use idotz.net to show all of the available TLD's. I think it would be pretty hard for a registrar to cherry pick if you use Idotz.
 
Don't use whois.net

I checked on two names for fun and within two minutes a domain name broker bought them.

If no site returned, then off to your registrar, and buy it!

I wouldn't even check it again there. Just try to buy it immediately. Sometimes there's no site associated with an already-registered domain name, so you'll fail, but otherwise, bingo!
 
just a though, does anyone here use the google keyword tool to check what terms have a shitload of traffic and then combine the keywords instead to get domains. Seems like people are working too hard or maybe i am sitting here kidding myself that i have found the magic key to finding out how to cherry pick domain names.
 
If it is something I fucking want, I search for it on godaddy and if it is avail, I buy it right then.

Otherwise, organize a list of 100-1000 domains you want and use the bulk purchase feature. Anything avail? Buy it right then.

No issues, you'll beat the squaters everytime.
 
As said above I usually just check in my browser for a domain name and then just go to godaddy and buy it. I think there is no true perfect method it's all about personal preference.
 
I have searched over 300 good & average domain names with namecheap and never had any problem.

One of my friends searched for a good domain name via godaddy and the next day it was already taken by a domain parking co.

I would suggest that if you find a good domain name you purchase it right away since it's the safest way.
 
As already mentioned on another thread, I use Whois lookup and Domain name search

These guys have been around for a while and I have never had any issues using them. Checking in the browser if a site is taken does not work as some of these lazy webmasters don't even bother with a parked page.
