On the firing line
Short story: we have a Vizio 42" flat screen. Not sure if it's plasma, LCD, LED or whatever. About 4 years old (maybe 3, again, not sure). All it all, it's been a pretty decent TV, but lately it will randomly decide to give us the green screen of death. This can last between 30 seconds to 30 minutes.

I'm thinking of getting a new TV.

Please help me. I'm not a TV geek, so I don't really know the difference between plasma, LCD, and LED. The pros / cons, what to look for, good pricing, etc.

Open to suggestions. Prefer not to spend a fortune (sub $2000, please) since I rarely watch TV anymore. If I do bother, it's usually a DVD / Bluray or Netflix.

Found this Samsung [ame=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004N866SU/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=A3ACU7TJEUXKOF]Amazon.com: Samsung UN55D8000 55-Inch 1080p 240Hz 3D LED HDTV (Silver): Electronics[/ame] that looks pretty nice. Is that a good TV? Good price?

Help!

I just stay away from plasma, I've had an lcd which I had no problems with for 5 years until one day it decided to not turn on anymore. I got an led from a cheapo brand "haier" stay away from them, it sucks but it was cheap. Led i think is ok but I already have a couple dead pixels, liquid crystal display and light emitting diode, I dunno wtf the difference are.

LED is LCD, just the backlight uses LED's instead of CCFL (fluorescent tubes). So you will get extremely long life, less power usage, less heat and instant turning on without it having to 'warm up' to full brightness. LED LCD's are also crazy thin.

Don't think I'd bother with plasma anymore but I'm sure you'll get AV geeks saying it's better in ways that don't matter to normal people that don't watch their TV through a microscope.

Summary, get an LED LCD, everything's cheap as shit in the USA anyway so who cares!

Absolutely Go for Plasma! Just got a new 42" LG plasma tv, The color quality of plasma is just so much better than lcd/led, it just astonishes me!

Here's another thing to throw into the mix: 3D. Worth it? Total shit? That one is under $1500 and has 4 pairs of glasses, and it's LED.

Maybe I should go to the local TV / stereo store and look at all these damn things. Fucking TV's annoy me. They aren't something I have much of an interest in, so I don't take the time to learn shit about them. Just want to turn it on, get Discovery channel on Wednesday night and watch some movies occasionally. Goddam frustrates the piss outta me.

If it weren't for the wife and kids, I probably wouldn't even own a TV. I'm ready to take the Vizio and use it as a target. Curious what some +P JHP .45 rounds would do to it....

My friends just got a new 3D 51inch tv, and its amazing. its full hd so even non 3d stuff is still amazing...

i thought 3D was not worth it but seeing sport on it like football (real football not american football) and discovery nature shit is amazing. its mind blowing.

if i buy a new tv i would get a 3D one

I personally wouldn't go for 3d, do you really see yourself watching tv with special glasses on?

So, do you have to watch ALL shows with the glasses? or just specific 3D stuff? If it's glasses all the time: fuck that. If it's only with special programs / movies, well then, no big deal.

The kids would love the 3D, especially my 8 year old.

If you're a PC gamer, you should get a 3D TV. All 3D PC games can be made to support stereoscopic 3D thanks to Nvidia's drivers, and the effect is fantastic.

Once my current 52 inch LCD TV will be six years old next year, I'm going to buy a new 3D LCD TV.

I also use my LCD TV as my computer monitor, and it works great!

I have multiple sets, my two mains are over 50 inches - Samsung Plasma and Samsung 3D LED -

The LED SMOKES the plasma. I love the plasma but for things like video games, the LED will blow it out of the water.

3D is great...Directv has four 3D channels now.

NBA basketball in 3D is the most amazing 3D experience.

This was over 3K weeks ago. Now Under 2K. Great set.

oh wow you can watch normal shit on 3D? I thought it was just special 3D movies and what not. This changes everything. I have nvidia 3d vision for computer games and that shit is crazy so if its anything like that for TV I can see it really being bad ass and worth buying.

I bought my plasma for gaming, the reaction times are so much faster, the colors are so much better; black is black instead of dark grey, white is white etc.

My office is right next to a TV repair service so we talk to the techs all the time. The one TV they say to NOT get is a Plasma. They say buy LED or LCD.

If you are going to be gaming on it, then my opinion is you have no choice, you'll have to get a plasma for the speed and hope for the best.
